SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,831, dated June 5, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ELI S. REED and AN- DREW J. STOOPS, citizens of the United States,
residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antifilling Devices for Bottles, 650.; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our present invention relates to an improvement in anti filling devices for bottles and other vessels, or devices for preventing the fraudulent refilling of bottles or other'receptacles which have a Wide reputation for the quality of the goods or other ingredients which they contain, with spurious or adulterated ingredients, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, cheap and successfully operating device for this purpose, and the invention therefore consists essentially in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

inner upper portion of this lower section B is also provided with a shoulder or annular recess 9 which is adapted to fita corresponding shoulder formed on theadjacent edge of theupper section 0 of the plug. The upper section 0 is of greater length than the lower section B and its interior is hollow,-forming the chamber D. This chamber D is provided in its center with the inverted U-shaped in cross-section or cone shaped shell or body E. This body E is preferably made almost solid, but with its lower portion hollowed out to form the inverted basin or depression F. The body E is situated a short distance below the upper end of the chamber D in an exactly central and fixed position by means of the pins or rods G G, passing through the body of the cone at right angles to each other and through the walls of the upper section 0, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It will thus be seen that by means of these rods G G, the cone E is hung in a central fixed position, so as to leave a space between the cone or shell E and the inner walls of the section (J. The lower edge or rim of the basin or depression F projects slightly below the upper end of the interior circular wall 6, say about three-sixteenths of an inch, leaving an annular space between said walls, as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. l. The lower edge or rim of the upper section 0 is formed with an annular shoulder h, corresponding to the shoulder g on the upper portion of the lower section B, so that when the two sections are in position a tight joint may be provided at this point.
The upper end of the plug is formed with the inclined central opening H, for the insertion of a small stopper or other closing means.
I denotes a hollow, slightly-tapering plug, substantially U shaped in cross section which is adapted to fit within the opening formedby the interior inclined face of the wall 6 and to close the opening d in the bottom of the lower section B as will be seen by referring to Fig. 1. The material of which this anti-filling device is made is preferably lava, although it may be made of any other suitable material. It is cemented in the neck of the bottle with any suitable cement, preferably silicate of soda, the joints of the two sections being also cemented.
When it is desired to apply the device in practical operation, the bottle or other vessel is first filled with the desired liquid or other goods; the lower section B is then cemented in position, the plug I inserted in its proper place in the opening (Z, after which the upper section 0 is cemented in place and a cork placed in the opening H.
When it is desired to empty any of the contents of the bottle, the latter is inverted and the plug I will drop into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig.1. The liquid will then flow freely out of the neck, in the manner indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. If any one should attempt to refill the bottle, it will be seen that the liquid will flow into the hollow chamber D, thence into the annular space f and up into the recess or depression F and into the opening 6 where it will impinge upon the top of the plug I and bind the same securely within the opening (1, thereby preventing any liquid from entering the bottle and thus preventing thefraudulent refilling of the same.
Numerous changes may be made in the exact construction and arrangement of the several parts of our invention, and we reserve the liberty of making such changes without departing therefrom.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Lotable chamber formed therein, in which is fixedly hung a substantially cone-shaped body in an inverted position and an opening in the upper end of said section for the insertion of a stopper, together with the plug valve located in the central opening of the lower section, substantially as described.
2. In an anti-filling device for bottles, the combination of the upper and lower sections, the lower section being formed with an .interior wall which is inclined on its inner face, an inclined plug located in the opening formed by this wall, and an upper section formed with a stopper opening in its upper end and with a receptacle for the rounded. end of the plug valve located in a central fixed position by means of pins or bolts.
3. The combination with the lower section B, having the interior wall e, the plug I located in said opening, of the upper section 0, formed with the hollow chamber D and having the inverted cone-shaped body E hung therein in a fixed position and the stopper opening II in the upper end of said section, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the lower section B, having the interior wall e and the opening d, the plug valve I located in said opening, of the upper section 0 havingachamber D therein, the inverted cone-shaped body E hung therein by meansof the rods or pins G G, said inverted cone shaped body extending a short distance below the upper edge of the walls 0, and the stopper opening I-I formed in the upper end of said section, substantially as described.
5. The combination with the lower section B, having the side walls b, the bottom a, opening 01, interior wall 6 inclined on its inner face, the inclined plug I located in said opening d, and the annular shoulder on the upper edge of said section, of the upper section 0, having the chamber D, provided with an inverted cone shaped body E held in a fixed position by means of the rods G G passing through said body at right angles to each other and at diiterent planes and through the walls of said section, the stopperopening II, and the shoulder h on the edge of the lowerend of said section, substantially as described.
