.AN'IIREFILLABLE BO TLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1913.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, (1) ALnKsANDnn E. SMITH and (2) LUnwIc'ZnoLnNsm, subjects of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at (1) Jersey City and (2) Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antirefillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an anti-refillable bottle, and the object of our invention is to furnish the neck of a bottle with a novel closure, whereby the contents of the bottle can be removed, but the placing of other matter in the bottle prevented by the novel construction of the closure.
Our invention aims to eliminate in the various practice of unscrupulous merchants in re-filling bottles that once contained a popular brand of liquid with an inferior article and dispensing the bottle as the original goods.
The invention will be better understood when reference is had to the accompanying drawing and the detaileddescription thereof.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a portion of a bottle in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line IIII of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the detached closure. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a check valve forming partof the closure, and Fig. 5 is a View illustrating details of a valve seat.
Further describing our invention with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denotes the neck of a bottle, jar or similar receptacle and this neck has a rim 2 an inwardly projecting annular flange 3 adjacent to the breast 4 of the bottle.
5 denotes a tubular valve seat mounted upon the flange 3 within the bottle neck, said valve seat being made of a vitreous material similar to the bottle neck.
6 denotes a check valve in the form of a spherical body that rests upon the valve seat 5 when the bottle neck is in an upright position.
7 denotes a cylindrical closure that is mounted in the bottle neck 1, said closure having a head 8 that rests upon the rim 2 and is secured thereto by cement or an adhesive material, whereby the closure cannot be removed without injuring the body neck 1. The closure 7, intermediate the ends thereof is provided with an annular groove 9 and said closure has the walls thereof provided with spiral grooves 10 and 11 in communication with the groove 9. The spiral grooves 10 are arranged the reverse of the grooves 11 and the outer ends of the grooves 11 are in'communication with radially disposed openings 12 provided therefor in the closure, adjacent to the head 8. The openings 12 are in communication with a funnel shaped opening 13 formed in the head 8 and the opening 13 communicates with a recess 14: adapted to receive an ordinary stopper or cork. The inner end of the closure has a recess 15 providing clearance for the check valve, and the inner end of said closure cooperates with the valve seat 5 in limiting a movement of the check valve 6 within the bottle neck 1.
The closure 7 prevents a piece of wire or instrument from being inserted in the neck of a bottle to raise the check valve 6 and permit of a liquid being poured into the bottle. The grooves 10 and 11 of the do sure allow a liquid to be removed from the bottle when the bottle is tilted or inverted to unseat the check valve 6.
The closure 7 is preferably made of a vitreous material similar to the bottle neck, also the check valve 6, whereby the contents of the bottle will not be susceptible to any chemical action by reason of the material usedin constructing the closure of a bottle.
One embodiment of our invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is In an anti-refillable bottle, the combination with a bottle neck, of a tubular valve seat supported therein, a spherical valve mounted upon said seat, a closure including an inner portion, an intermediate portion and an outer portion, said intermediate and inner portions connected together by a neck provided with an annular groove, said inner portion having its inner end recessed for the reception of said valve and its periphery formed with spiral grooves, said intermediate portion having its periphery formed with spiral grooves reversed with respect In testimony whereof we affix our signato the spiral grooves of the inner portion, tures in the presence of two witnesses.
said outer portion enlarged for seating upon ALEKSANDER E. SMITH. the outer edge of the neck and hollowed, LUDWIG ZEGLENSKI.
5 said intermediate portion provided With Witnesses for Aleksander E. Smith:
radially disposed ports communicating with ALETA KOUR, the outer ends of the spiral grooves of said HIPOLITE TOULAWSKI. portion and further communicating with the \Vitnesses for Ludwig Zeglenski: recess in said intermediate portion said re- ALEX KoUR,
10 cess communicating with said outer portion. I-IIPATAUSKI ToroTAwsKI.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
