Description
M. W. SEND.
BOTTLE STOPPER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 24, 1911.

Z 1 F05 Z v,
MAURICE V7. SEND, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
Application filed June 24, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE lV. SEND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to bottle stoppers and it has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character which will automatically open when the bottle is tilted, and will close itself when the bottle is in an upright position.
The invention has furthermore for its object the provision of such device in which the weight is employed for gravitatively actuating the closure-member of the spout, said weight being disposed extraneously of the spout so as not to interfere or come into contact with the liquid or other contents of the bottle.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear and be defined in the claims.
The invention has been clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar characters denote similar parts, and in which-- Figure 1 shows the neck of a bottle equipped with my improved device; Fig. 2 is a section on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 illustrates the bottle tilted and the closure gravitatively opened.
Referring to the drawings, 10 denotes the neck of a bottle adapted to receive a cork 11. A tube 12 is tightly secured in the cork 11 and has in its curved outer end an outlet opening or spout 13 and also an ear 14: on which is pivoted a pendicularly suspended cap 15 which consists substantially of a chambered casing having its top and side walls inclosed, so that when the bottle is in its upright position, the cap entirely surrounds the spout and seals the outlet opening against dirt, dust, etc.
In the present instance the side walls 16 have pendulum weights 17 for automatically bringing the front wall 18 into position to Specification of Letters Patent.

close the spout, and the rear wall 19 is of such length as to serve for a stop to limit the gravitative movement of the cap and leave the spout uncovered when the bottle is in its tilted position as shown in Fig. 3. It will therefore be seen that neither the cap or any part of it will ever come into contact with the contents of the bottle or have its opening and closing action interfered with. Furthermore my improved device may be made ornamental in configuration, and characters or emblems may be readily inscribed on side walls thereof, thus identifying the contents of the bottle without requiring labels or other advertising matter such as would be undesirable in connection with cut-glass or silver receptacles.
In order to produce a proper finish the cork 11 may have a collar cap 20 of china, silver or other material to which the tube 12 may also be secured and which may serve as a compressing member for the cork to seal the tube therein at that point.
Many changes may be made in the particular construction of my improved device especially in the construction of the cap and its articulation on the tube, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A bottle stopper comprising a bottle neck closure, a tubular spout extending therethrough and having an outcurved end portion, an ear on the spout on the upper side of the bent portion, a cap having a pair of substantially parallel depending side walls embracing the upper portion of the spout and the ear on which they are pivoted above their centers of gravity, a front wall between the side walls adapted to seat itself against and seal the mouth of the spout when the closure and spout are in upright position, and weights secured on the inner faces of the side walls below the pivot centers thereof.
2. A bottle stopper comprising a bottle neck closure, a cap over the upper end thereof, a tubular spout secured in the cap and closure and provided with an outbent end portion, an ear on the spout on the upper side of the bent portion, a cap housupright position, and Weights on the lower ing the upper portion of the spout, a pair end portions of the side Walls. 10 of substantially parallel depending side In testimony whereof I atlix my signa- Walls on the cap embracing the ear on Which ture in presence of two Witnesses.
they are pivoted and depending below the MAURICE W. SEND. latter, a front Wall uniting the side Walls Witnesses:
and bearing against the mouth of the spout F. E. ERNST,
as a seal When the spout is in substantially ANNA C. RAVILER.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
