To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN PAPPA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Broom-Shield, o which the following is a speciiication.

The invention relates to improvements in broom shields.

The object of the present-invention is to improve the l0 construction of broomshields, and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive broom shield, adapted to be readily applied to and removed from a broom, so that after a broom has become worn, it may be readily transferred to a new broom. i

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character adapted to protect and increase the durability of a broom, and at the same time preserve the original shape oi the same. l

The invention valso has for its object to provide a broom shield adapted to yieldably clamp a broom at opposite sides thereof and below the bulged upper portion o the broom head, whereby it will be retained in place on the broom. without employing astening'devices.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims, hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the orm, proportion, size, and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any o the advantages of the invention.

In the drawing-. Figure l is a perspective view of ay portion o a broom provided with a detachable shield, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view ofthe shield, the broom being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional 40 View taken on the 1in@ 3a of Fig. 2. l designates a tapering broom shield, designed to be constructed o resilient sheet metal, or other suitable material and provided at the top with a reduced portion 2, which is circular to t a broom handle 3, as clearly illustrated in Fig. l oi the drawing. The detachable broom shield, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, is constructed oi two separate ,sides or pieces 4, and may be molded, pressed, or otherwise constructed o any suitable material possessing sufiicient resiliency to clamp a broom around and beneath the bulged portion 5 at the upper portion of the broom head where the 5 5 broom straw is shaped over the lower end of the handle. l

The sides 4 are united by seams 6 at the opposite sides of the broom head, and these seams may be attened as shown or be constructed in any other desired manner, as will be readily understood.

Below the upper reduced portion, the sides 4 -oi the shield are bowed or bulged outwardly at 7, to provide an intermediate enlarged portion, which is curved longitudinally and transversely as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, and which receives the upper portion or shoulders of the broom head. The sides are extended laterally belw the enlarged intermediate bulged portion 7, and are bent inward toprovide a lower contracted portion 8, which is substantially oblong in cross section to coniorm to the configuration o and iit closely against the stitched portion 9 of the broom head.

T-he detachable shield, which is applied to a completed broom, is fitted over the enlarged upper portion 'or shoulders of the broom head by compressing the end walls inwardly -for bowing or bulging the lower contracted portion, and after the same has passed the shoulders of the broom, the end walls of the shield are re leased and will spring outwardly automatically and cause the lower contracted portion 8 of the shield-to engage and firmly clamp the broom head beneath the shoulders and at the stitched portion 9 of the broom.

The lower resilient engaging or clamping portions o the sides of the shield rmly hold the latter on the broom,

so that there is no liability oi the shield becoming accidentally displaced. The shield is adapted to preserve the shape oi the broom, and it will protect the broom straw and increase the durability o the broom. When it is desired to transfer the shield from a worn broom to a new one, the shield may be readily removed from the broom head by inverting the broom and striking the handle against the floor or other surface.

Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-

An upwardly tapering detachable broom shield adapted to be applied to completed brooms and constructed of resilient material and consisting of an upper reduced circular portion to fit the handle of a broom,v an intermediate enlarged or bulging portion to receive the upper p0r tion or shoulders of a broom head, and a lower contracted portion oblong in cross section and forming a clamp, which engages a broom head at the stitched portion thereof beneath the bulging upper portion of the same to detacbably secure the shield to the broom, the said shield being adapted to be compressed at the side edges of the broom to open the clamping portions or jaws to permit the same to be passed over the upper portion or shoulders of the broom head.
