Description

THOMAS LEACH, OF TAUTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO REED AND BARTON/OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 85,834, dated January l2, 1869.
IMPROVED G-OBLE'IL.
-The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LEACH, of Taunton, in
the county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have `invented a new and improved Goblet; and I dorhereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- My invention is represented bya side view, a portion of the neckof the goblet being broken away, to show the construction 'of the joint between the bowl and the standard. In this invention the bowl of the goblet is of glass, and the standard of silver or other metal, the two parts being connected by a screw-joint, so that they can read ily be taken apart, in order that, if the bowl should get broken, another may be inserted in its place, and thus a new goblet be produced at a comparatively slight expense.
[n the drawingl A represents the standard, provided with a screw, a, upon its upper end, and l B represents the bowl, its lower extremity being provided with a. s hort neck, b, which is irmly cemented in the upper end of a connecting-cap, C.
Thscap is made of metal, chambered in its upper end, to receive and hold the neck bf the bowl, and provided with a female screw in its lower end, to receive the screw a of the standard. It is moulded to any ornament-al shape that may suit the taste.
The object of this invention is, by the means above described, to provide, for public use, a goblet of such a construction that, if the glass bowl should accidentally be broken, it will not thereby be rendered useless, but by having a new bowl inserted in place of the old one, and which will not cost more than one-half the price of an entire new goblet, the whole thing can be rendered as good as new. One silver standard will thus last -ay lifetime.
The goblet, thus constructed, will not onlyV have the advantage above claimed for it, but will be handsomer in appearance than if made wholly of glass or ofmetal; and, while producing the ornamental eii'ect of silverware upon the table, it will not necessitate the contact of the lips with a metallic substance, which, to some people, is very disagreeable. v
Having thus described my invention,
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, a goblet, having a metallic pedestal and stem, and a glass bowl, substantially as and for the purposes described.
' THOMAS LEAOH.
