Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLORIAN GROSJEAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPOONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,240, dated February 28, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORIAN GROSJEAN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have made an invention of certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Sheet- Metal Spoons; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description and specification of the same.
The object of these improvements is to e11- able the shank of a spoon-handle formed of sheet metal and the junction of the shank with the bowl to be made of great transverse strength out of one piece of sheet metal.
To this end myinvention consists of a sheetmetal spoon having the shaft of the handle strengthened by lips of the same material, bent inward, so that the thickness of the shank at the doubled parts is greater than the thickness of the sheet metal of which it is formed, and also leaving the junction of the shank of the handle with the bowl strengthened transversely byaforkedhollow bead, whose branches diverge toward the sides of the bowl.
A spoon constructed according to the invention is represen ted in the accompanying drawing, Figure l representing the face of the spoon,'and Fig. 2 representing the back of the spoon.
In this example the shank A of the handle is formed of sheet metal, with lateral lips b b,
Fig. 3, which are bent so as to be doubled back upon the back of the shank, and the junction of the shank A with the bowl O is stiffened by the forked hollow bead or corru gations m.
In constructing spoons upon this system the blanks are cut out of the sheet metal in form represented at Fig. 3. Then the lateral lips or portions outside of the dotted lines c c c c are bent upward and inward, so that their edges meet, or thereabout, at the center of the back of the shank, as at e e, Fig. 2. The curvature of the spoon and the forked hollow head or corrugation m are then formed by stamping the article in suitable dies conforming to the form required.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sheetmetal spoon with both the shank of the handle stift'eued by lips of the same sheet metal, turned inward, and the junction of the shank with the bowl stiiiened by a forked hol` low bead, substantially as before set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave hereto set my hand this 17th day of May, A. D. 1870.
