To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER Down, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and use- ;lul Improvements in Studs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable other skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to studs such as are commonly .used by laundrynien in the buttonholes of shirts, and consists in the novel constructions hereinafter fully explained and then particularly pointed out in the claims which conclude this application.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 represents a metal blank such as is used in constructing my improvementFig. 2 is an edge elevation of the completed stud, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the same.
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
1 denotes a sheet metal blank the upper edge of which is preferably rounded as seen at 2. In the manufacture of my improvement from this blank the stock at the upper portion of the latter is forced outwardly in opposite directions so as to afford protuberances 3, 4, which extend respectively on opposite sides of the vertical plane of the shank 5 of the completed stud. The lower portion of the blank is slit upwardly at its middle part, and these slit portions are bent at right angles to the body of the blank in opposite directions so as to afford flanges 6, 7, which constitute the base of the stud. A stud made in this manner possesses marked advantages in that it is very cheap, and can readily be inserted within and removed from a buttonhole.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A' shirt stud made from a single sheet metal blank whose lower part is split up wardly a short distance the portions thus formed being bent outwardly in reverse directions at right angles to the body of the blank to form the base of the stud, the upper edge of said blank being rounded and the stock near said edge displaced laterally in reverse directions to form the head of the stud.
2. A shirt stud made from a sheet metal blank having reversely extending flanges to form the base of the stud, a rounded upper edge and reversely disposed protuberances near said edge to form the head of the stud.
