SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,411, dated December 29, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that LFRANKLIN G. NEUBERTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waterville, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons,- of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in [O collar-buttons, the object of the same being to provide an article of this kind or character which though cheap and inexpensive to make will in its finished form present the appearance of the more expensive buttons.

With this and other ends in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in elevation of the button before applying the cap. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cap. Figs. 3 and tare sectional views of the button at different stages of its formation. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the finished button, and Fig. 6 a perspective view of the same.

The button may be formed of any desired metal, but preferably of zinc, by reason of the fact that such metal does not corrode or oxidize, and therefore will not stain or mark the clothing, the head of the button, as will be hereinafter described, having. a cap or covering applied thereto formed of gold or other precious metal.

5 The button proper is preferably turned or otherwise formed from a single piece of metal, 7 representing the post or shank provided at one end with the base-plate 8 and at the opposite end with a head 9. In this head isformed a groove or recess 10, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the formation of such groove resulting in the plate or flange 11. Over the head 9 is placed the cap 12, formed of gold or other precious metal, or, if desired, base metal gold plated, the sides 13 of the cap extending downwardly over the groove or recess 10, as illustrated in Fig. 3. By means of a proper tool the extreme edges of the cap are then turned inwardly into the groove, as illustrated in Fig. t, after which the plate or flange is spun or bent upwardly against the inturned edges of the cap, as illustrated in Fig. 5, thereby securely looking the cap in place and preventing its disengagement from the head 9 of the button.

From the foregoing it will be understood that my improved collar-button is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, at the same time presenting the appearance of an article made of precious metal. Being made of zinc, it will not soil or mark the clothing, and as the edges of the flange 11 are bent upwardly to a considerable distance over the edge of the cap, as illustrated in Figs. 5- and 6, it will be seen thatthe zinc portions only of the button will come into contact with the clothing, preventing wear of the cap and the marring thereof when made of gold-plated metal.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Acollar-button consisting of a base, post and head, said head being provided with a circular groove or recess forming a flange below the same, a cap applied to said head and having its edges turned inwardly into said groove, said flange being bent upwardly against the inturned edges of said cap, substantially as described. 2. A collar-button consisting of a base, post and head formed of one piece of metal, said head being provided with a circular groove and a flange below the same, and a cap fitting over said head and having its edges turned inwardly into said groove, said flange being bent upwardly against the inturned edges of said cap, substantially as described.
