Description

v F. "E; WILLIAMS.
(No Model.) I
NATIONAL Lmmlurmma WAamNe'r WITNESSES: W @WA UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK E. WILLIAMS, OF ALHAMBRA, CALIFORNIA.
BUTTON-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 511,482, dated December 26, 1893.
Applicationfiled April 13, 1893- Serial No. 4701199. (NomodeL) To all whom it mag/concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK E. WILLIAMS,a citizen of the United States, residing at Alhambra, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to thejfigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7
This invention relates to fastenings for shoes, gloves, 850., employing a male and a female member, and has for its object to provide a spring action for either one or both of said members by a simple and effective construction which is strong and durable.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be more more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1,is a perspective view of the improved fastening member showing thread holes in the base plate thereof. Fig. 2, is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of a fastening member with a circular base and securing prongs. Fig. 4.,is a top plan view of a modification.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a base plate having a head 2 formed thereon. The base plate is provided either with thread holes 3 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or with prongs 4 as shown in Fig.3. The said base is also formed, in each instance, with a cut or slit or aperture 5 on opposite sides of the head, and the head is cut through and through or slit transversely and vertically as at 6, the latter slit intersecting the said slits in the base plate. By this means the head is divided into two archesand a spring action is thereby given thereto that will always cause the said head to return to its normal position shortness of the said head.
after pressure applied thereto is removed, or cause a locking action with another engaging member. It will be seen that the slits in the base essentially produce this spring action in the head, for, if said slits or apertures in the base did not exist, the squeezing action applied to the head would cause the latter to re main in an abnormal condition, and would not return to its proper form owing to the Changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be made without departing from the nature or' spirit of the invention.
The said head be- In Fig. 4 more than one slit is shown extending through the head and continuing into the base plate as M7, to obtain the spring action desirable. I
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is As an improved article of manufacture, a button fastener, consistingof a base plate having apertures or slits therein terminating in-' side the perimeter thereof, anda head struck up therefrom between said apertures or slits and of itself provided with a slit or slits extending entirely therethrough both in a vertical and a transverse direction and communicating with said apertures or slitsin the base,
Substantially as described.
In testimonywhereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK E. WILLIAMS.
