To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARMENo OALIooHIo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Look, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact desoription. 1

This invention has for its object to provide a look simple in construction, effective in operation and durable in use.

Other objects relating to the specific construction and special arrangement of the several parts of my invention may be understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan of a lock embodying my invention with one of the sides of the casing removed Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one end of a key adapted to be used with the lock shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

As illustrated in the drawings, 1 represents the side plate of a lock of ordinary construction provided with a rim 2 and sockets 3 adapted to receive screws by means of which the outer plate is attached to the casing. .A knob spindle 4 is mounted to rock in the casing and is provided with an arm 5 fixedly attached thereto, adapted to engage a shank 6 of a latch 7 which has its bearing in the rim of the lock casing. The shank of the latch is held in a guide-way 8 preferably consisting of a sleeve fixedly secured to one side of the casing independently of the opposite side of the casing. A recess 7 a is formed in the shank 6 of the latch with which the arm 5 engages, thereby enabling the latch to be reciprocated in the casing by a rocking movement of the knob spindle 4. The inner end of the shank of the latch is off-set and preferably provided with a curved central portion 8 adapted to extend to and bear against the hub 9 of the arm 5. The ofi-set end 8 of the latch is also adapted to bear against the stop or post 10 which limits the outward movement of the latch in the casing. A spiral spring 11 is fixedly secured at one end to a post 12, the opposite end of said spring hearing against the ofi-set end of the shank of the latch so as to force the latch normally outward and resist a backward movement of said latch. The head of the bolt 13 is provided with a shank 15 having back notches 16 formed therein, which are en- 6o gaged by'a lug 17 formed on a tumbler 18, which tumbler is attached to a stud 19 and thereby secured to the lock casing. A spring 20 is attached to the back of the tumbler 18, and the free end of said spring bears against the stop 10 thereby limiting the upward movement of the free end of said tumbler. The shank 15 of the bolt is provided with a guide-way adapted to hold the shank of the bolt against vertical displacement,'and pref- 7c erably consists of a slot 21 adapted to receive a pin or stud 22 secured to the casing. The shank of the bolt is also provided with a projection 23 forming with said shank on opposite sides thereof recesses 24 adapted to receive the ward of a key. The casing is provided with a slot of any desired construction adapted to receive a key which is preferably applied to the look by means of a sleeve 25, that is j'ournaled in the sides of said casing, and provided with a hub 26 held within the casing by means of the sides thereof. central bar 27 is connected with the interior of said sleeve by means of a web 28 which supports said bar in the axial line of the sleeve and forms a support for a key designed to be used therewith. To this end I prefer to provide a key 29 with a slot 30 communicating with the barrel of the key, which is adapted to receive the end of the rod 27, the slot 30 of the key engaging the web 28 of said sleeve. The sleeve 25 is arranged so as to project from eitherside of the casing and permit the lock to be attached to a right or left hand door as desired.

When in operation the key 29 is engaged with the bar 27 of the sleeve 25, so as to rotate said sleeve in the casing, the outer portion of the ward 32 of the key bearing against the edge of a flange extension 33 formed on the 100 tumbler 18, which raises the free end of the tumbler so as to release the lug 17 from engagement with the notches 16 and permit the bolt to be shot in the casing by the end of the ward of the key striking against the wall of 10 5 the recess 24 of the shank of the bolt, which projects the arms 14 of the bolt partially through the rim 2 of the casing, as shown in Fig. 1, and also brings the lip 23 of the shank of the bolt in close proximity with the key so 1 to as to enable the end of the ward on the second rotation of the key to bear against said lip and project the bolt 13 entirely through the rim of the casing. Said bolts are retracted into the casing by a corresponding reverse rotation of the key.

In the construction herein shown and described, the bolt is provided with double arms 14. WhileI prefer to use such construction in most instances, I do not desire to be limited thereto, as a bolt provided with a single arm may be used without departing from my invention. Again, while it is most desirable that the bolt should be provided with means enabling it to be projected to its full extent, or to the extent of so much there of as may be desired, a bolt adapted to be shot to its full extent by a single rotation of a key may be used in lieu of the construction herein shown, without departing from my invention. I do not, therefore, desire to be limited to the specific construction shown and described herein. The construction of the key to be used in carrying out my invention may also be modified without departing from the scope or spirit thereof.

Having thus described my invention,.what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A lock comprising a casing having a bolt provided with back notches, a guide way, and a plurality of ward contact surfaces, a tumbler pivotally attached to said casing and provided with a lug adapted to engage the notches of said bolt, a spring adapted to hold said lug in engagement with said notches, and a curved edge adapted to be raised by a key inserted in said lock, to release said lug from engagement with said notches, and enable the ward of said key to be brought in contact with said bolt, and a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and provided with a central rod offset from the wall of said sleeve, adapted to receive the barrel of a key and hold said key in engagement with said casing, substantially as shown and described.

2. A lock having a casing, a bolt mounted to slide therein and provided with back notches, a tumbler pivotally mounted in said casing and provided with a lug adapted to engage said notches, a spring'adapted to hold said lug in engagement with said notches, and an extension projecting across the shank of said bolt adjacent to said contact surfaces, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said casing, and provided with a central bar adapted to receive the barrel of a key, and a web connecting-said bar with said sleeve adapted to engage the slot of a key and hold said key in engagement with said sleeve, substantially as shown and described.

3. A look having a bolt provided'with a shank having back notches formed therein, and key contact surfaces, a latch pivotally attached to said casing provided with a lug adapted to engage said notches, a spring adapted to hold said lug in engagement with said notches, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and provided with a central bar having a web connected therewith and with the interior of said sleeve, and a key provided with a barrel adapted to engage the end of said bar and having a slot adapted to engage the web of said sleeve, substantially as shown and described.

4. lock having a casing, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and provided with a central bar adapted to receive the barrel of a key, and a web connecting said bar with said sleeve, adapted to engage the slot of a key and hold said key in engagement with said sleeve, substantially as shown and described.
