BoX-FASTENER.
No. 857,217.y
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed April 4, 1906. Serial No- 309,887.
To all whom t may cm1/cern.- y
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TrscH,.a citizen of the United States, residing vat La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and Statel of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to box fasteners.
One object is to provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, durable and efficient fastening for application to various types of boxes. Y
Another object resides in the provision of a box fastenerembodying such characteristics that itmay be positively locked against unfastening and effect a tight closure between the lid and the boxproper.
I/Vith these andother objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and operative aggrou'pment of parts all as will be more fully described hereinafter, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and nally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box illustrating one form of my invention applied thereto, the dotted lines indicating the position of the' head of the keeper when the lid is positively locked upon the box. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the fastener illustrated in Fig. 1, including a portion of the box. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the keeper plate. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification showing the fastener applied to a box with a raised cover. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latch member detached. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the keeper and its attaching plate.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings the referencecharacter 1 indicatesa boxprovided with ahinged lid 2,
the hinge connection being of any character and indicated at 3.
In order to hold the lid 2 in tight engagement with the upper edges of the sides and ends of the box 1, I provide a T-shaped keeper plate 4 which is secured to the box 1 at any suitable point by means of fastenings 5. The tail 6 of the keeper plate 4- is bent or upset to form a loop 7 intermediate the ends of the said tail portion 6 to receive the eye 8 in one end of the latch 9, there being a short longitudinal slot 10 formed in the latch member 9 to permit of the passage therethrough of the head 11 of a T-shaped keeper 12, which latter isswiveled in the head of the keeper plate 4. The free end of the latch member 9 is bent, turned or otherwise formed to provide a lip 1.3 designed to engage the lupper face of the lid 2 to bind the latter in close engagement with the box proper.
To fasten the lid upon the box the head 11 I of the keeper is turned so that it may aline form a seat a for the base t of the keeper 12,l
and also to project into the recess c of the latch member. This arrangement permits and insuresl a tight binding action between the inner face of the keeper head 11 and the bulged portion of the latch memberformed as the result of producing the seat a referred to immediately above. It will thus be understood that even when the head of the keeper is in alinement with the slot 10 of the latch 9 the lip 13 of the latter will serve to hold the lid in its closed position under normal conditions and that a positive fastening is effected by simply turning the keeper 12 in the manner stated.
The fastening hereinbefore described is easily adjusted and effects a positive locking connection between the lid and the box and in the event of the application of my improved fastening to a box provided with a raised lid; that is to say, a lid 14 whose upper face is above the plane of the lip 16, as in Fig. 4, I prefer to dispose a slotted plate 15 along the corresponding face of the lid to receive the lip 16 of the latch 17. With the exception of the slotted plate 15, which is an addition to the aforesaid structure, the modified form of the invention is the same as that first herein described.
As shown in Fig. 6 the keeper may be formed by a blank of suitable material provided with reduced ends and bent upon itself to form the head 11 andshank 12 with a disk 18 fitted upon the shank and the reduced end of the blank forming the shank bent, as at 19, to retain the disk upon the shank.
Having thus described my invention what IOO IIO
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a boX provided with a hinged lid, of a keeper plate provided with upper and lower outwardly directed portions, a latch member pivoted at one end to the lower 'outwardly directed portion of said plate and having its opposite end directed at an angle to its body portion for engagement with the lid of the box to force the latter tightly upon the sides and ends of the latter, said latch member also having an outwardly directed portion to embrace the upper outwardly directed portion of the keeper plate and provided with aslot, and a keeper swiveled on the keeper plate and provided with a head to pass through said slot of the latch member and bear against the outwardly ldirected portion of the latter to lock the lid against accidental opening.
2. The combination with a box provided wardly directed portion to lock the lid` against accidental opening.
' 3. A keeper comprising a body portion having reduced ends and bent upon itself to form a head and a shank, and a disk fitted to said shank.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
