UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IOHANN VVOTRUBA, OF AACHEN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO EUGENE E. V. SEY- FRIED, OF NEIVARK, NE\V JERSEY.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 394,320, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed January 5, 1888. Serial No. 259,845. (No model.) Patented in Germany April 15, 1882, No. 19,961.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANN WorRUBA, a citizen of the German Empire, and a resident of Aachen, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box-Fasteners,
(for which I have obtained a patent in Germany April 15, 1882, No. 19,961,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in IO fasteners for cigar-boxes and for other boxes.
It consists of a supporting-plate fastened to the cover of the box, and a circular lockingplate pivoted to the same and engaged by a hook fastened to the side of the box,co1nbined with means for securing the lockingplate in its extreme positions.
My invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a top view of part of a box provided with my improved fastening, showing the cover locked. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover unlocked. Fig. 3 is a vertical section in the plane a; a9, Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a vertical section in the plane 11 y, Fig. 2.
2 5 5 is a perspective view of the hook. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the locking-plate; Fig. 7, an inverted perspective view of the supporting-plate; Fig. 8, a sectional view showing the fastening applied to the cover 0 in a diiferent manner.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
M represents part of the cover of a box, and N part of one of its sides.
5 A is a circular disk pivoted to a support, B, by means of a pin, p. This support is shown in the form of a circular plate; but it may be of any other desirable shape, or may be omitted and the pivot secured to the cover of the box. This disk A forms a lockingplate. It is provided with a proj ection, Z), for
turning it, and with a slot, to, for receiving and holding the hook C. For this purpose one end of the slot- C6 is made large enough for 4 5 the head of the hook C to pass through, while the remaining part is large enough for receiving the shank of the hook A without allow ing the head to pass through.
The supporting-plate B is fastened to the cover of the box by means of prongs s, or by other suitable means. It is provided with a hole, 71, through which the head of the hook 0 passes when the cover of the box is turned down, a corresponding hole, 0, Fig. 3, being formed in the cover of the box.
The hook C is fastened to one of the sides of the box by means of nails or prongs. The locking-plate A and its support B are by preference countersunk in the cover of the box, as shown in Figs. and at, so that none of the parts shall project inside or outside.
A modified method of attaching the support is shown in Fig. 8, where the same is attached to the lower side or inside of the cover M.
For securing the plate A in its extreme positions, I provide a locking device consisting of a stop, on, slightly projecting from the lower side of the locking-plate A, and engaging recesses or holes 02 or n in the supporting-plate B when the locking-plate is in its extreme positions, Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 2 shows the cover of the box turned down and the head of the hook 0 passed through the enlarged part of the slot (1. By pressing against the projection Z), so as to turn the locking-plate to the position shown in Fig. 1, the cover is locked to the side of the box.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is A box-fastening consisting of a support- So ing-plate, B, fastened to the cover of the box and provided with holes or recesses '12 n, a circular locking-plate, A, pivoted to the sup porting-plate and provided with a hole, 72, projection. b, and a stop, on, in combination with a hook, C, fastened to the side of the box and engaging the hole 71, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of De-' celnber, 1887.
