ANTONIO SAVASTANO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LADYS COMB WITH ADJUSTABLE ORNAMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed May 14,1906- Serial No. 316,811.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTONIO SAVASTANO, having declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cityof New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Ladys Comb with Adjustable Ornament, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combs or more particularly to the ornamental effects applied to combs such as metal, porcelain and similar ornamental supplemental backs which may be removed and others substituted as will be more fully described in the following specification set forth in the appended claims and shown in the drawings.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a comb showing the ornamental back. Fig. 2 is a view of the opposite side more clearly illustrating my invention.
In the drawing, the body of the comb 2 is shown provided with a detachable back 3 which conforms with the shape of the body of the comb and is intended to provide an orna mental efiect for same. It has been the practice heretofore to make these backings of material which are designed to be sprung into position on a comb of celluloid, gutta percha or similar material, but this backing was necessarily made of a non-resilient metal such as silver or gold and in the effort to spring the same in place the back was bent out of its shape and the efficiency of the device destroyed. It is to overcome these objections to a supplemental back as above described that I apply to the said back 3 at each end resilient ofi'sets 4 and 4 preferably of steel which are riveted to the back 3 or otherwise secured thereto. These offsets on one side are provided with spurs or pins 5 which are adapted to enter holes or recesses in that end of the comb 2 while the offset 4 on the other end while riveted or soldered to the supplemental back has its upper end free and carries also a pin 6 entering a socket in the comb and which by the free movement of the springing action of the offset may be removed from its socket when the supplemental back may be swung outward until the offset 4 clears the comb and the pins 5 may then be removed from their sockets.
It will be seen that the above construction does not require a supplemental back of resilient nature which is particularly undesirable when said back is enamel or provided with ornaments or decoration which might otherwise be dislocated if the shape of the back were changed. This feature of my improved invention therefore becomes a very desirable one and provides for a back of very simple construction and one not liable to become dislocated or loosened from the comb yet easily detached when it is desired to apply the same to a new comb.
It is obvious that the shape or form of the spring offsets may be different to enable the user of the comb to distinguish the one by which the back is released.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a comb the combination with a supplemental rigid back conforming with the body of the comb, of resilient oflsets on the supplemental back and carrying attaching means adapted to engage the comb and se cure the back thereto.
2. In a comb the combination with a comb having sockets at each end, of a supplemental back conforming with the shape of the comb and carrying springs with pins or prongs adapted to fit into the sockets of the comb.
Signed at city of New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 1st day of May A. D. 1906.
ANTONIO SAVASTANO.
