BARRETTE v Specification of Letters luttent.
Patenuoet. 5, 1915.
Application mea March ze, 1915. serie; m. ram.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BECHTOID,
y a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State' 'of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BaL'etLLof which the following is a specilic'ation."
The invention relates to hair 'fasteners andarrange these additional retaining means that the same shall be substantially invisible when the barrette has been arranged in position and thus not mar the effect of the barrette.
The nature of the invention will be best understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which-l Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved barrette provided with additional retaining means. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a'fragmentary front elevation illustrating a modification.
Similar characters of referencev designate corresponding parts throughout the several views..
Referring to the drawings, 10 designatesl the body portion ofthe barrette and which may be of any suitable shape and desired ornamentation. The same is provided with the usual pin or tongue l1 hingedly 'con- ',nected--at one end of the said body portion and isadapted to `be locked in a suitable catch 12 secured to the other end thereof, as
lis well understood.
vTlfn' accordance with the present invention, a short comb or locking piece comprising a body member 15 and teeth or prongs 16l is secured to the back of th'e body portion 10 of vthe barrette substantially midway of its ends. The said teeth or prongs 16 are arranged to extend backwardly from the body 10 and are directed downwardly, either directly (Fig. 2) l-or atan angle (Fig. 3),
toward the tongue member 11. butdo not Yextend beyond the said member. The thickness of the body portion 15 as well 'as the curvature 'of the teethlextending therefrom is such that the comb is offset to some extent from the plane of the barrette body 10, whereby when the barrette is inserted' into the hair of the wearer, the vadditional retaining portion will be substantially' invisible being entirely covered by the hair.
In addition to the usual holding action of the tongue 11, itfwill be observed that the teeth 16, or rather the vcomb of which the :teeth are a part, will serve to securely lock .fthe barrette against any downward motion.
Moreover, afurtherholding action is ob- ,tained by .the cooperation of the tongue 11 with teeth 1G themselves and between which the hair will be clamped. Owing to the fact that the said teeth do n ot extend beyond the tongue 11 and are suitably offset,
' no diiiculty will be experienced in inserting the comb in the hair, nor will the said comb tend to become visible.
l claim l A barrette, comprising a back or body portion provided with a longitudinal opening, and a tongue pivotally attached thereto at one end, and adapted to be locked at the other end, a short comb portion extending rearwardly and downwardly vfrom seid back or body portion substantiallyto the middle thereof into the space between said tongue andA body portion, and. mid-way of the ends of the latter and substantially parallel thereto, whereby upon downward movement of the barrette said coinb will bite .deeper into the hairto lock 'the barrette against displacement, said-,comb alsovcooperating with the tongue to securely lock the barrette.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 26th day of Marcin-A. D. 1915.
WILLIAM S. BECHTOLD.
