Description

RING MOUNTING. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 24. 1915.
l 1 88,841 Patented June 27, 1916.
THE COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH c0., WASHINGTON, n. c.
THEODORE scnnon, or CALEDONIA, NEW YORK.
RING-MO'IUNT'ING.
Application filed November 24, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE H. Sermon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Caledonia, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ring- Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ring mountings and refers particularly to mountings for artificial pearls or other hollow gems.
An object of my invention is the provision of a mounting in which the artificial pearl or gem is held securely and firmly in place, thus preventing the artificial pearl or gem from being lost, and which presents an ornamental appearance.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a substantial, durable, and otherwise more desirable setting for artificial pearls and other gems, which can be used by any skilled person.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists of a ring mounting em bodying novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as described and particularly defined by the claims.
In order that the detailed construction, features of merit and its many advantages may be fully understood, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a ring mounting constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention, it being understood that I do not limit its use to ring mountings and any changes or alterations may be made which fall within the spirit and scope of my claims.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the ring with the crown broken away to show the manner of securing the pearl. View, the pearl being shown in section to clearly show important details, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the split pin for securing the pearl in the crown of the ring.
In carrying out my invention, I employ the ordinary ring mounting A, having the usual crown or prongs B, which in the old manner of setting bind against the gem and Specification of Letters Patent.
Fig. 2 is a similar Patented June 27, 1816.
Serial No. 63,181.
thus hold it in place, but in my invention I employ in connection with the ring A, the pin C, having the head D, fitting in the counter-bored recess E, said pin C, having its shank passing through the opening G and terminating in the split or pronged portion H.
In the drawings, I have illustrated my invention in connection with an imitation pearl (I, of hollow construction, having the opening K, to receive the prongs H, which are spread apart as shown in Fig. 2, and when in this condition and embedded in the cement L, they serve to lock the pearl in proper place in the crown of the ring. The prongs on the pin are first sprung apart, then their ends squeezed together and in serted in the gem, the prongs naturally springing apart after entrance into the gem and in that position are secured by the hardening of the cement, effecting the perfect securing of the gem. Afterthe gem has been set in this manner, the head D, of the pin C, is soldered in the recess E, thus securely and firmly setting the gem and preventing any possible chance of the gem becoming loose in the mounting or lost.
Thus it will be seen that I provide a mounting which will be small, neat and attractive in appearance, which will securely retain the gem; and one which can be used as a ring mounting or in fact in any place where a mounting of this character will be desirable.
I claim 1. In combination with a finger ring, of a mounting for any hollow gem, consisting of a crown portion having a cylindrical opening on its under side and having a counterbored recess in the bottom of said opening, a pin having its head soldered in said recess, said pin having its end split, a hollow' gem, having an opening to receive said pin, said hollow gem being filled with cement to secure the split ends of said pin.
2. A mounting of the character described consisting of a crown portion having an opening leading to an enlarged recess therethrough and in the bottom of said opening forming a seat, a hollow gem fitting in the crown and having an opening alining with the opening of the crown, and a, pin disposed in said opening with a lower head fitting in the said seat and an upper split end forming a pair of prongs entering the opening of the gem and adapted to be spread to secure the gem in the crown.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature 1n the presence of two wltnesses.
