ORNAMENT FOR JEWELRY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,508, dated February 4, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM BLASSING, of Central City, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornaments for Jewelry; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in ornaments for jewelry.

The object is to provide a device for attachment to watch-chains, ear-rings, breastpins, bracelets, buttons, or similar articles of jewelry or apparel; and it consists in a folding star capable of being worn open or closed and to serve as an ornament in either adj ustment.

The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinanations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aview of the device closed, and Figs. 2 and 3 show views of both sides of the device when open.

A represents a thin plate or body of gold, silver, or any other metal. It is preferably cut in the shape of a pentagon, though this shape is immaterial, and it is obvious that it might have more or fewer sides, as may be desired. Triangular leaves 1 1 are hinged to these sides to form points to the star when the device is open, as in Figs. 2 and 3, or sides to the device when closed, as shown in Fig. 1. These leaves are in the shape of isosceles triangles, and are hinged along their short sides, so that the points are quite long and narrow. The edges of the leaves may be beveled 011 the inner face to form tight joints when the device is closed, and to prevent them from fo1ding over too far when closed a flange 2 is formed on the inner face of the pentagonal plate A, just inside of the hinges. One of the leaves is provided on its inner face at or near the point with a small lug 3, which has a screw-threaded hole therein. The points of all the leaves restagainst may be engraved to suit the fancy or finished in various styles, and when closed it has the appearance of being a solid piece of metal. It should be mentioned, in this connection, that the use of this device is by no means confined to charms for watch-chains; but, as previously stated, it may serve as a pin, button, or other jewel with Very slight alteration. Of course it may be made of different material and in various shapes and sizes. If in the form of a star, it might have more than five points or even less, but'five is the number generally preferred.

It is evident that other slight changes might also beresorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction herein set forth; but,

Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An ornament consisting of a body, a series of plates hinged thereto, and a cap carried by one of the hinged plates for holding the hinged plates in closed position, substantially as set forth.

2. A11 ornament consisting of an angular body, a series of angular plates hinged thereto, and a cap carried by one of said plates for holding the plates closed, substantially as set forth.

3. An ornament for jewelry, consisting of a polygonal plate, triangular leaves hinged thereto, and a cap connected with one of the leaves for holding the points together, substantially as set forth.

4.
