Description

(No Model.)
' A. HESSELS. Gem Setting.
No. 233,678. Patented Oct. 26, 1880.
WITNESSES: I INVENTOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES AFTHONY HESSELS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PATENT OFFICE.
GEM-SETTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,678, dated October 26, 1880.
Application filed May 8, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY HEssELs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Diamond-Settings, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved diamond-setting, and Fig. 2 an enlarged side View of one of the cramps of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
One of the main objections to the present gold-settin gs for diamonds is, that their cramps or stays are too weak to sustain the diamond properly in position, especially when the same is exposed to extra strain, such as in fingerrings and bracelets.
The cramps or prongs of diamond-settings have heretofore been provided with short tips of platinum or other white metal more nearly the color of the diamond than gold, for the purpose of rendering said tips invisible, or nearly so, when viewing the diamond from the top, and causing the diamond to appear larger than it really is. These tips were solderedto the extreme upper ends of the cramps, being inserted in recesses cut therein to receive them. The said tips did not strengthen the cramps, but, on the contrary, were liable to be forced oft by pressure on the diamond, so that their hold on the diamond was relaxed and the latter liable to get detached and lost.
My invention is designed to produce a diamond-setting in which the cramps are strengthened or re-enforced throughout their entire (No model.)
length, so as to furnish a better and stronger support of the diamond, and in addition thereto a more ornamental appearance.
The invention consists of a diamond-setting the cramps of which are provided with exterior re-enforcin g platinum ribs or facin gs, which extend throughout the entire length of the cramps.
1n the drawings, A represents a setting of any suitable design, the cramps of which are provided with exterior platinum ribs or facings, B, which are soldered to the outside of the cramps and extended throughout the entire length of the same, projecting slightly above and below the cramps, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. These re-enforcin g ribs or facin gs B of the cramps increase the strength of the cramps and enable them to hold the diamond in a stronger and more reliable manner than the common settings, so that they are less exposed to loss by pressure or wear thereon.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A diamond-settin g the cramps of which are provided with exterior re-enforcing platinum ribs or facings, which extend throughout the entire length of the cramps, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in the presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of May, 1880.
