BUST GIRDLB. APPLICATION FILED JULY 5, 1908' In: mmms PETERS co, WASHINGTON, n. c.
PATENT ornron NORA DUNLAP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BUST-GIRDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
fi gcatiot: 5131 July 5,1906. Serial No. 324,838.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NORA -DUNLAP, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bust- Girdles, of which the following is aspecification.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved bust girdle of simple and strong structure, and of convenient form to be readily attached to the wearer and to be readily adjusted both vertically and in width to suit the form of the wearer. These objects are accomplished by the structure shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a bustgirdle constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view omitting some of the details and showing the position of the girdle when the front straps are tied together, in the form in which the device will appear when adjusted in width to the body of the wearer. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the girdle is secured and adjusted in connection with a corset.
The body of the girdle is formed of the parts 1 which are connected in the back at the seam 2 and secured to the parts 3 at the seams .1. The parts 3 are sewed upon a strap 5 both at the seams 6 and at the seams 7 and 8. The parts 3 are extended to form the straps 9 each of which is sewed at 10 to the lower part of the body 1, so as to leave openings at 11 between the body and each strap 9. The body is provided with darts 12 and 13 at each side to improve the fit of the girdle and is provided with a plurality of stays 14 at each of the arm-holes. These serve to push the surplus flesh down and in, and serve to hold the lower part of the garment down in proper position. The strap 5 is provided with a buttoning loop 15 and an adjusting buckle 16, the end of said strap being secured to said buckle, and the strap extending through a slot in the buttoning loop 15 in the usual manner which is employed in adjusting the length of similar straps. A pair of tapes 17 are secured to the lower edge 20 at the back of the garment. The straps 9 are formed as a downward extension of the parts 3, and said parts 3 are formed to widen toward their upper parts so as to in1- prove the fit of the girdle and to provide a seam extending from the lower middle part of the girdle toward each shoulder strap, to strengthen the girdle against the strain thereon when the straps 9 are tied together.
The girdle is fitted and adjusted to the wearer in the following manner: The wearer will attach the girdle by drawing it down over the head and arms so as to support the same around the bust means of the shoulder straps 18. The ends of the straps 9 will then be passed through the opposite openings 11, and will be drawn together and tied in front as shown in Fig. 2. These may be tied directly without being passed through the openings 11. Said openings, however, provide for a better binding effect in tying the knot when a tight fit is desired. The tapes 17 will be passed through the corset lacing at the back and drawn forward around the waist, outside of the corset where they are tied as shown in Fig. 3. The knot formed with the straps 9 will be pulled through the front opening in the corset and held in this position between the front busks when the same are secured together. The strap 5 will be adjusted to the desired length by means of the buckle 16 before the corset is fastened down the front, and the loop 15 will be secured over one of the corset fastenings or studs. This serves to hold the front of the girdle down in proper position. The straps 9, when knotted together, provide for considerable fullness of the girdle at 19 as indicated in Fig. 2. This provides for releasing the pressure of the girdle at the upper middle part by lengthening the strap 5. The lower edge 20 of the back of the girdle is held down to the proper position by means of the device 17. The girdle may be used without a corset but is particularly adapted for use in connection with a corset, whereby it is held in proper position as shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A bust girdle comprising a body part having shoulder straps formed thereon and having a tie strap at each side of the lower front edge of the body part, said tie straps being suitably spaced to permit of adjusting the width of the girdle, and a strap extending downwardly from the front of the girdle and provided with attaching means adapted to engage the front of a corset.
2. A bust girdle comprising a body part having shoulder straps formed thereon and having a tie strap at each side of the lower front part of the body part, said straps being suitably spaced to permit of adjusting the width of the girdle therewith, each of said straps being so secured to the front and lower edge of the body part as to leave an opening between said strap and body part for retaining the opposite strap, and an additional strap extending downwardly from the front of the girdle for its vertical adjustment.
3. A bust girdle comprising a body part having shoulder straps formed thereon and having a tie strap at each side of the lower front part of the body part, said straps being suitably spaced to permit of adjusting the width of the girdle therewith, each of said straps being so secured to the front and lower edge of the body part as to leave an opening between said strap and body part for retaining the opposite strap. I
4. A bust girdle comprising a body part forming a continuous bandadapted to surround the bust of the wearer, and having shoulder straps thereon, said girdle being out out at the middle part of its lower front edge, a strap secured at each side of said cutout portion, said straps being adapted to be secured together for adjusting the width of the girdle, and an additional strap extending downwardly and secured above said cut-out portion for adjusting the girdle vertically.
5. A bust girdle comprising a body part, permanently closed across the front having shoulder-straps thereon, said body part having secured to the upper front edge thereof, and extending downwardly below said body part, a pair of straps whichare widened at their upper parts to extend from the middle toward said shoulder straps, and having their lower ends adapted. to be secured together for adjusting the width of the girdle.
6. A bust girdle comprising a body part having shoulder-straps thereon, said body part having secured to the upper front edge thereof, and extending downwardly below said body part, a pair of straps which are widened at their upper parts to extend from the middle toward said shoulder-straps, and having their lower ends adapted to be secured together for adjusting the width of the girdle, and an additional strap secured at the upper middle part of said pair of straps and ex tending downwardly and adapted for vertical adjustment of the girdle.
7. A bust girdle comprising a body part having shoulder-straps thereon and being cut out at the lower front edge, a strap secured to said lower edge at each side of said cut-out portion, said straps being adapted to be secured together for adjusting the width of the girdle, and a pair of tapes secured to the lower back edge of the girdle and adapted to extend around the waist for adjusting the back vertically on the wearer.
8. A bust girdle comprising a body part, permanently closed across the front having shoulder-straps formed thereon, said body part being cut out at the middle part of its front lower edge, a pair of straps each being widened at their upper ends, secured together and to said body part so as to form the front upper edge of the'girdle, and being extended downwardly at each side of said cut-out portion and adapted. to be tied together for adjusting the width of the girdle.
9. A bust girdle comprising a body'part having shoulder straps formed thereon, said body part being cut out at the middle part of its front lower edge, a pair of straps each being widened at their upper ends, secured together and to said body part so as to form the front upper edge of the girdle, and being extended downwardly at each side of said cut-out portion and adapted to be tied together for adjusting the width of the girdle, and an additional strap secured. to said pair of straps at their middle connected part, be-
ing adjustable in length and having a buttoning loop at its lower part.
10. A bust girdle comprising a body part having shoulder straps formed thereon and having a tie strap at each side of the lower front part of the body part, said straps being suitably spaced to permit of adjusting the width of the girdle therewith, a loop at each side of the lower front part of the body part adapted to receive the opposite strap, and an additional strap extending downwardly from the front of the girdle for its vertical adjustment.
Signed at Chicago this 30th day of June, 1906.
