Be it known that I, ALBERT F. STAPLES, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in a Manifolding Book or Pad, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the ac.

companying drawings.

This invention relates to duplicate carbon pads for salesmen; and it has for its object the simplifying and cheapening of the constructions of this character heretofore employed, and the provision of a binding or covering for the pad to which the latter may be conveniently and quickly applied, which cover will give the necessary protection to the pad, and at the same time afford ready access thereto, and the necessary stiffening therefor while the salesman is writing upon the pad.

In the drawing, forming a part of'this application, Figure 1 shows in perspective the different parts of the pad and cover, the parts being separated one from the other, but ready to be assembled in the order indicated by the arrangement of the parts in the figure; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the pad and cover in assembled condition Fig. 3 .is a transverse section of the pad and cover, shown as if taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a transverse section, enlarged, of a modified form of pad, having a somewhat different arrangement of stiffening back therefor.

In these pads it is desirable that the carbon sheet be secured to the pad in such a way that it will not become lost or misplaced, and at the same time that it be so arranged as to be protected from injury and also be readily adapted for being placed between any of the sheets of the pad desired. It is necessary that the pad be provided with a suitable back or support,so that it will have suflicient stiffness, and that the entire pad be protected from injury by a suitable covermg.

Referring now to the drawing, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents a. pad, composed of sheets of paper secured together at one of their ends, said pad being also secured at that end to a stiffening back 2. This back I may be of any suitable material, but I prefer to make the same of pasteboard, that material being cheap and having ample rigidity for the purpose. The carbon paper is shown at 3, the same being secured along one edge of the back 2, as appears plainly from Fig. 3. By this construction, the carbon paper is always in position for use, it cannot be lost or misplaced, and it does not have to be repeatedly moved from one position and inserted in another and, by attaching the same below the lowest sheet of the pad, it can be continuously used until the last sheets of paper in the pad are taken up.

In order to protect the carbon paper at the edge of the pad, the stiffening back 2 is flanged or turned upwardly at its edge oppo site the carbon paper, as shown at 4, said flange being, preferably, integral with the back, and being of such a height as to project as high as the upper sheet of the unused pad. In order to stiffen the flanged portion of the cover or back, a suitable corner stay 5 is employed, said stay being bent about the corner of the back, and secured at its opposite edges to the back and flange respectively.

In order to give the necessary protection to the pads so that they may be carried in the pockets of the salesmen, I provide a cover therefor and means for attaching the pad to the cover, said means consisting of a plate having a flattened portion 6, against which the back 2 is ada ted to lie, said flattened portion being pre 'erably, but not necessarily, of about the same size and shape as the back 2. At one end of this flattened portion the plate is turned at a right angle, forming a part 7, and then again at substantially a right angle to the part 7, as shown at 8, the part 8 extending for a short distance over the flattened portion 6, so as to form therewith a spring pocket or clamp for the reception of that end of the pad where the leaves are secured together. The plate be ing formed of resilient material, the pad will be held firmly within the pocket or clamp.

The cover, proper, consists of the sideboards 9 and 10, which are flexibly secured together at 11, the boards 9 and 10 being somewhat longer and wider than the back 2 so as to project slightly beyond the same and give protection to the pad. Attached to one of said boards adjacent the flexible portion "11, is a flattened sleeve or pocket 12 into which that portion 6 of the plate is adapted to be inserted. When the pad is secured within the clamp of the plate, and the part 6 thereof is inserted into the pocket 12, as shown in Fig. 2, the parts are assembled; and by closingthe upper board 10 over the top of the pad, the latter is secured within the cover and is protected thereby from injury.

While I have shown the pocket 12 as pivoted to the hinged end of the board 9, this is not a necessary construction, as the pocket may be formed within the board 9, or it may be secured to the face of said board and not pivoted thereto.

In Fig. 4, which shows a modification, 1 represents the pad, 2, the back therefor, and 3, the carbon sheet, the latter being sesured alongside one edge of the back, as heretofore described. In order to further stiffen the back, and to provide protection for the carbon sheet at the edge of the pad, a plate 13 is provided, said plate being bent along one of its edges, as at 14, and then again bent inwardly so as to form a clamp or pocket for the edge of the back 2. At the, opposite edge, the plate is bent at substantially a right angle so as to form a flange 4, said flange being of substantially the same shape, and having the same function as the flange 4 desicribed in connection with the first form of a p Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is:

1. A device of the character described, consisting of a plurality of sheets of paper secured together and forming a pad, a plate bent so as to form aclamp, said clamp being adapted to receive and hold the pad, a cover for the pad, and a pocket carried by the cover, said pocket being adapted to receive the said plate, whereby the pad is secured to the cover.

2. A device of the character described,

comprising a plurality of sheets of paper secured together and forming a pad, a plate bent so as to form a clamp, said clamp being adapted to receive and hold the pad, a cover for the pad, and a pocket pivotally secured to the cover, said pocket being adapted to receive the said plate, whereby the pad is pivotally secured to the cover.

,3. A device of the character described, comprising a plurality of sheets of paper secured together and forming a pad, a plate bent so as to form a clamp, said clamp being adapted to receive and hold the pad, a cover I for the pad composed of side boards hinged together, and a pocket pivoted to the cover adjacent the hinge thereof, said pocket being adapted to receive the said plate, whereby the pad is pivotally secured to the cover.

4. A device of the character described, comprising a plurality of sheets of paper secured together at one of their ends, a stiffening back therefor secured to the paper, a carbon sheet secured to said back below the paper, the free portion of said sheet being adapted to be inserted between the sheets of paper, a flange secured to said back and proj ecting alongside one edge of the paper so as to protect the carbon sheet, a plate bent so as to form a clamp, said clamp being adapted to receive and hold the paper and the back therefor, a cover for the paper, and a pocket carried by the cover, said pocket being adapted to receive the said plate, whereby the paper is secured to the cover.

5. In a device of the character described, a plurality of sheets of paper secured together at one of their ends, a stiffening back therefor secured to the paper, the free portion of said sheet being adapted to be inserted between the sheets of paper, a flange secured to said back and projecting alongside one edge of the paper so as to protect the carbon sheet, a corner stay attached to said back and said flange for stiffening the latter, a plate bent so as to form a clamp, said clamp being adapted to receive and hold the paper and the back therefor, a cover for the paper, and a pocket carried by the coyer, said pocket being adapted to receive the said plate, whereby the paper is secured to the cover.
