Description

` 4%; mieli t 7 y Sgntent @film WILLIAM ROBINSON, OI? ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.r
Letters Patent No. 85,535, dated January 5, 1869; antellated December 22, 1868.
` IMPROVEMENT 1N BUTTON-HOLES FOR PAPER COLLARS.
The'Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pan: of the same.
ATo all whom it 'ma/y concern .Be it known that I,WIIQL1AM H. ROBINSON, of
Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Holes, especially as applied to paper collars, cuffs, and similar' articles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and accurate description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of this invention is to avoid the rigidity and want of elasticity which form a serious objection to the buttoning of all paper collars, cuffs,'&c.
This rigidity is not only objectionable on the score of inconvenience in buttonin g, but it causes the buttonholes to tear out, even though stayed or strengthened by cloth pasted over them ;k and in addition to this, the
vordinary button-holes in paper articles are very apt to unbntton from the same cause.
I avoid these difficulties by means of an elastic button-hole, formed as follows: -I punch out of thin rubber, or mould, as may be deemed best to adjust, a piece, similar to the size and shape shown dark in Figure 3, and having a hole in the centre.
I punch a. button-hole in the collar or cuff, about the 'size and shape shown in Figure 2 or 4, and extending is only necessary to take hold of the extreme corner or free edge, and pull it out. The small hole is then enlarged and elongated, so as easily to slip over the button; and by removing the tension, it contracts firmly around the neck of the button, and holds the same securely. l
' What I therefore claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An elastic button-hole, formed by attaching rubber to the fabric, and having the hole in the fabric cut through to the outer edge, for the purpose as fully set forth and described.
' WM. H. ROBINSON.
