Description

W. H. BURDEN. HAT HOLDING DEVICE.

HAT-HOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1907.
Application filed July 7,1906. Serial No. 325,145.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BURDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hat holding de- Vices embodying in its organization a hair engaging member or comb and a clamping device cooperating therewith to effectually engage the hair of the wearer, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character which may be readily installed for use, one whereby the employment of pins for holding the hat are dispensed with, and one which obviates injury to the hair and also to the hat or other head gear.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat equipped with a holding device embodying the invention and showing the same applied for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the hat and the device. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hair engaging member or comb. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the clamping member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a hat having a brim 2 to which is attached a holding device 3 adapted for engagement with the hair of the wearer and to maintain the hat in position on the head, there being preferably employed a pair of the holding devices disposed respectively at opposite sides of the hat.
The device 3 forming the subject-matter of the invention comprises a hair engaging member or comb 4 having downwardly and inwardly inclined teeth 5 and a clamping member or plate 6 disposed at the outer side of and parallel with the comb and to coopen ate with the teeth 5 for clamping the hair within the latter.
The comb 4 is provided with an outwardly projecting, horizontal portion or shank 7 formed to fit beneath the lower face of the brim 2 and having a plurality of openings or perforations designed to receive stitches 9 for attaching the device to the hat, while the clamping plate 6 is provided with an outwardly inclined finger piece or shank 10 between which and the stem 7 there is arranged a substantially Z-shaped spring clip 11 having its end portions secured respectively to the parts 7 and 10 for yieldably connecting the clamp 6 with the comb 4 and permitting a sliding action of the former relative to the latter. I I 1 i In practice and in the operation of adjusting the hat on the head the finger pieces 10 are pressed upward at their outer ends for swinging the clamping members 6 away from the engaging combs I, whereupon the hat may be seated in place. During the action of placing the hat in position, the teeth 5 of the combs will, due to being pitched at a downward initial inclination, properly enter the wearers hair, after which and upon releasing the finger pieces 10, the clamps 6 are moved under the action of springs 11 to clamping position for holding the combs in the hair and securing the hat in place on the head of the wearer. It will be understood that in removing the hat the clamps are moved outward, as before explained, and further that the improved device renders the employment of hat pins unnecessary and obviates the injury to the hat and hair which is attendant upon the use of pins.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A hat holding device comprising a fixed hair engaging comb having downwardly and inwardly inclined teeth and provided with a horizontal shank portion, a movable clamping member having an outwardly projecting finger piece, and a substantially 2 -shaped spring disposed between and having its end portionsattached respectively to said shank and finger piece and serving as the sole means for connecting the clamping member with the comb.
2. A hat holding device comprising a fixed hair engaging comb having downwardly and inwardly inclined teeth and provided with a right angularly projecting shank portion adapted to lie upon'and perforated for attachment to a hat brim, a clamping member connected with the comb and having a body portion disposed parallel with and adapted member for pressing the latter to clamping to cooperate with the comb for engaging the position. I0 hair, said clamping member being provided In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature with a right angularly disposed shank porin presence of two witnesses.
