Be it known that I, FRED J. MOOERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orofino, in the county of Shoshone, State of Idaho, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Hair-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to hair pins and the object thereofis to provide a device of that nature which will retain its position in the hair of the wearer, and which will be provided with means for preventing its accidental displacement therein.

The invention will be readily understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, and from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1.

Like parts are designated by corresponding numerals in the several views.

Referring to the drawings and in particular to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 thereof, the hair pin will be seen to consist of two members 6 and 7 of similar construction, each having its upper end enlarged to form a handle portion 8 and each provided at its lower end with a conveXed jaw 9. Each member is likewise provided intermediate its ends with a laterally extending conveX shoulder 6 formed integral therewith, there being a longitudinal slot or recess 7 formed in each shoulder. These shoulders are disposed toward each other, when the members of 6 and 7 are fastened together, as hereinafter described, the slots 7 therein being in alinement with each other when the members are in such position and serving as seats in which the opposite (lands of a thin metal strip 9 fit, as shown in The members are connected together by means of a pair of straps 10, which are disposed transversely across the side faces of said members adjacent the shoulders 6, each strap being secured at opposite ends to the corresponding members by pins 1 1 which are passed through openings therein, said straps being disposed exactly opposite eachother,

as shown. The two members will thus be firmly connected together, and each will have a limited play at its ends toward andfrom the other, the width of the slots 7 being sufficient to permit the members 6 and 7 to move easily upon the strip 9 which thus acts not only as a brace, but also as a guide plate to prevent displacement of the members from each other in case one of the straps 10 be-' comes loosened.

Located between the handle portions 8 of the members, is a spring 12, the ends of which are connected with the respective handle portions to normally separate or force the same apart, thus closing the jaws 9 on the lower ends of the members in contact with each other.

When inserted in the hair and with the lower ends in contact, it will be readily seen that any displacement of the hair pin is practically impossible without closing the handles 8 and thus releasing the lower ends from contact with each other.

The handles of any of the constructions shown may be ornamented in any fashion desired, and the members 6 and 7 may be constructed of any preferred material.

What is claimed, is

A hair pin comprising a pair of members each provided with a handle portion at its upper end and a conveXed j aw at its lower end, each member being further provided with an inwardly directed shoulder having a longitudinal slot formed therein, said slots being in alinement with each other when said members are connected together; a metal strip having its opposite ends engaged in said slots to form a guide for said members; a strap disposed transversely across said members adjacent said shoulders, on each side thereof, each strap being connected at opposite ends to the corresponding members; and a spring connected at opposite ends to said handles, to normally force said handles apart and said jaws together.
