UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 1
JAMESH. FLETCHER, or BRIDPORT, VERMONT.
ADVERTISING-STAND.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 19.07.
Application filed March 9, 1905. Serial Ho. 249,331.
To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that '1," JAMES H. FLETCHER, a .citizen'of; the United States, residing at Bridport, in the count QfQAddisonandStEt of Vermont, have'invented certain new and the piles of goods Without disturbingthem.
As is well-known, it has been the usual custom to place the articles on a counter, table, ore uivalent, in stores, and advertising them by'sign holders, having a heavy board base,
supporting a standard with cards, and often nailed down, to keep them in a vertical position.
Another'object is, to produce a sign holder provided with a thin, metal base, supporting the standard for the advertising cards; The.
base is slipped between the goods on a pile, Whether dry-goods, canned goods in glass jars, n'otions, or any other kinds of merchandise. Furthermore, "to preventthe pile of goods from tilting, as is the case Withstandards having a thick base; also, so that the sign can be placed on the rear of the pile or-on the front; and finally that it can be produced at a reasonable cost.
With these objects in view, my'invention consists in the peculiar construction of certain details, and the novel arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the, claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters thereon,
*Like letters indicate similar parts in the diflerent figures of the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a-perspective view of my improved sign holder and base. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the 'same' In the drawing, A representsa light stands made of wood or other suitable material and i made in two parts 0 and D. It is held together by a. collar Egid can be adjusted by .a set screw e to different heights. At thelower-end of the part 0 is arranged a slot (Z, into which is inserted the vertical part B of the base B, which is horizontal, and is held in place by the pins (1, cl. The corners of said base are rounded, to'facilitate the introduction of the. horizontal part between the bolts of dry goods, canned goods, 'etc., to be advertised A collar E is 'placed around the two parts of the standard, and has a set screw 6 to adjust the parts, as desired. The upper part 0 is provided with two thin metal strips g, g, curved slightly toward their adjacent ends, andcan be adjusted. by the set screws h, h, to suit different Widths of cards to be inserted between them. The card F is. inserted in a-slit in the upper end of the standard C. I
The standard is made very light,,as it has nothing very heavy to support, and also to "obviate the necessity of a heavy or thick base, A thick base, if inserted, would cause the pile to tilt and perhaps cause it toiall, while my thin metal base could be readily inserted or slipped betweenthe goods at any place, and would not take up any appreciable space' or thickness. ,Itis made of tin, sheet iron, or its equivalent. If it is desired to place the sign on the rear of thepile, the base is-simply turned in on that side and the sign will then be on the rear side. If, however, the sign isto show in front of, the pile, it is merely reversed. It is also well adapted for the. display of notions of all. kinds, small wares, several kinds of ieces of dress goods,
cards of buttons, samp e cans of tea, coifee, rice, spices, or any, kinds of marketable articles or ware.
The many advantages possessed by my proved card displaying standard and base. will be readilyappreciated by merchants and.
others requiring such devices, and will. require no further elucidations here.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut, is:
1. The'combinatioifof a standard madein two parts, the metal base B, having a vertical part B, the lower rt D having a slot 12 ard, upon which the card-is displayed. It is its lower end, into which the part B of the what metal base B is inserted, and the collar E, 1 screws 71, h, for adjusting said strips, alias dei0 having; the set sew-xv e for adjusting said l scribed. parts, with the metal strips g, g, prov'ded In testimony whereof I hereby aifix 111) with the set sc lrmvs 71., Z1, l'fr adjusting said i signature, in presence of two witnesses. s n s arranges 5%01'163. 1 i 4 T s r W t The st-zii'ida'rd. li'iade in two parts C and JQKES I LETUQR' D, the metal base B, having the vertical part l Witnesses: B, in combination with the collar E, its set li'ssELL MYRIQ screw e, and the metal ships 9', g, and set/l Eons D. W'oons.
