3 Be it known that I, FREDERICK W001), a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residin Place, Liverpool, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to rolding or collapsible bedsteads, for military uses, camping, and general purposes.
A bedstead according to this invention comprises four uprights connected by two folding end-frames and two folding side frames. The construction of said side and end frames is such that when the bedstead is erected they form with the said uprights a rigid structure, and may be folded so as to occupy small space when the bedstead is taken down. A bed-sheet is stretched between the heads of the said four uprights, and means are provided for stretching such sheet.
. Reference to the annexed drawings. Fig. ure 1- is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a bedstead constructed according to this invention. Fig. 3 illustrates the same bedstead partly folded. Fig. 4 is a plan of the bedstead, and Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the same. Figs. 6 and 7 are two views showing the bedstead when it is folded for transport or storage.
' The improved bedstead comprises the four posts A, the two side rails B, and certain'jointed stay-rods which are hereinafter referred top The bed proper is formed by the canvas or similar sheeting C, the ends of which are attached to the rollers D, E. Each side rail B is rule-jointed at F, the ends of the rails being pin-jointed to the posts A. Connectingthe said rule-joints F with the posts A are jointed stays which comprise two members, G and H, a projection g on the member G overlapping the member H,
whereby the said members form a knucklejoint. The ends of the bedstead are formed by diagonal stays, each of which comprises two members, J and K, a projection j on the member J overlapping the member K, whereby said members form a knuckle-joint. On the heads of the posts A are slotted socket pieces L, which receive the pins (1, e, in the ends of the rollers D, E, and attached to these rollers is the bed-sheet C. A pawl M at No. Upper Hope.
engages a ratchet N on the bottom roller E, so that the bed-sheet may be kept in tension. When the two halves of the side-rails B are opened out into alinement with each other, and the two halves G, H, and J, K, of the side and end stays are similarly placed in alinement, it will be seen that these side rails and side and end stays and the four posts to which they are all jointed, form a rigid structure, ready to receive the end rollers of the bed-sheet and to bear the weight of the occupant. When the bed is occupied, the posts A become levers of the first order, the side rails B forming 'the fulcra while the stays G, H, are subjected to tension. To fold or collapse the bedstead, the bedsheet C and its rollers are first removed. The knuckle-joints of the end stays J, K, are then broken to permit of the two sides of the bedstead being laid against one another. The knuckle-joints of the side rails B and side stays G, H, are then similarly broken so as to permit of the posts A assuming the position shown in Fig. 2, and of ultimately being laid in alinement with the side rails B as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, in which figures is shown the bedstead as folded into its smallest compass The posts A and side rails B are preferably tubular. The said posts are provided with feet 0, and projecting from these feetat right angles-are pins a, l), which receive the stays G and K and are then riveted over. Collar ieces P are shrunk or otherwise fixed upon t e posts A and possess pins p, g, at right angles to one another, which pins receive the side rails B and stays and are then riveted over.
X is a mosquito curtain frame which is stepped in the sockets Y.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A bedstead comprising u rights A, and side members B jolnted at stays H, G, flexing in one direction and connecting the joint F with the feet of the members A, and stays J, K flexing in one direction and connecting the feet 0 of the members A with the collars P on the opposite members.
