.30 A ganged L. A. SUNDERLAND, OF CHAGRIN FALLS, OHICL Letters Patent No. 84,973, dated December 15, 1868.
I IMPROVEMENT IN MILK-CANS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. A. SUNDERLAND, of Chagrin Falls, in the county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View. I
Figures 2 and 3 are detached sections, that will be referred to in the description.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in-the views. I
This case, A, is constructed similar to those described in my former patent, of August 6, 1867, the cover 0 being made so to pass inside of the can, and be supported by means of hooks, B, the said hooks catching on the edge of the can, as shown in 1.
Passing round and secured to the lower edge of the can is a flange or ring, D, leaving space enough between the can and said ring for the flange, a, of the ring or base, E, to be inserted between them.
Fig. 2 shows an under-side view of the ring or base, E, and wooden bottom G, and I Fig. 3, a vertical section of the same, showing their connection with the can.
The metal ring or base, E, is provided with two flanges, a a, at'right angles with each other, the flange a passing, as before stated, between the ring D and On the flange a rests a supplementary wooden bottom, G, the upper side of which is formed convex, as seen in fig. 3. The metal bottom of the can A, in soldering, becomes sprung out of shape by the heat of the soldering-iron, which renders it liable to an oscillating motion, that, in a short time, Wears or destroys the can. The object of this supplementary wooden bottom is to give support to the metal bottom,
by being fitted snugly to it, and thus prevents the said motion, and, at the same time, giving additional strength 'to the can. The ring E is secured to the can by means of the the flanged ring or'base, E, screws 12, and can A, ar-
r nged as described, and for the purpose set forth.
