Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed October 16, 1905. Serial No. 282,951.
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAMIE FRERKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of Iowa and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shirts and Shirt waists, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of shirts and shirt-waists, and particularly to means for securing the waistbands of shirt waists and neglige shirts about the Waist of the wearer and supporting the trousers of the wearer, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and effective construction of securing.
and supporting means which will be concealed from View while in use and will admit of the wearer dispensing with the vest and coat without any unsightly supports appearing.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a shirt, partially broken away to better show the suspenders, which latter partly appear in broken lines. Fig. 2 is a perspectlve view of the lower portion of the shirt, showing the waistband.
The shirt or shirt-waist 1 is of the openfront type and may be formed with or without attached collars and cuffs. The shoulder portions of this garment are provided upon the inner faces thereof with suspendingloops 2, which may consist of short straps of fabric sewed or otherwise suitably attached. These loops support the shoulder-straps of a pair of ordinary suspenders 3,, having front and rear attaching ends 4 and 5, adapted to be buttoned or otherwise fastened to the waistband of the trousers. By this construction the suspenders are supported upon the inside of the garment and are concealed from view while the garment is in use.
The waistband of the garment is inturned or stitched to form a hem or pocket 6, in which is disposed a belt or band 7. One end of the belt or band is fastened to the garment at or adjacent to one of the meeting ends of the waistband, to which end is also fastened a button or other suitable securing device 8. Stitches or fastening means securing this button in place may also pass through the adjacent end of the belt and secure the same in position. The opposite end of the belt projects through the opposite end of the pocket at the complementary meeting end of the waistband and is folded back upon itself to form a loop 8, the free end of which is fastened to a sliding clasp 9, carrying a pivoted clamp 10 to engage the body of the loop and adjustablyfastening the sliding clasp thereto. The outer end of the loop 8 carries an eye 11 to engage the button 8 to secure the meeting ends of the waistband together. Through the provision of the extensible loop S and sliding clasp 9 the belt 7 may be adthe waist of the wearer, which operation may be accomplished by sliding back upon the belt the adjacent end of the pocketed portion of the waistband and then adjusting the clasp 9 as desired. The waistband may therefore be lengthened or shortened to suit any particular size of Waist and secure the lower portion of the garment snugly and comfortably about the person of the wearer.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A shirt or shirt-waist provided with a waistband-pocket open at one end and permanently closed at the opposite end, a belt disposed in said pocket, one end of the belt being turned back to form a loop projecting partially through the open end of the pocket, and the other end of the belt being permanently fastened at the permanently-closed end of the pocket, a fastening member secured to the latter-named end of the pocketed portion, a complemental fastening-loop upon the projecting end of the belt-loop, and a clasp slidably engaging the belt and connected with the free end of the loop, whereby the belt may be adjusted as to length, said clasp being normally inclosed within the pocket and provided with a clamp to fasten it in adjusted position, whereby the inner wall of the pocket will act as a shield to prevent pressure of the clasp upon the person of the wearer.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MAMIE FRERKSON.
