Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. ALLYN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poneto, in the county of Wells, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in VVire-Fence Stays g and' I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to ,which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wire-fence stays, i and has for its object to provide a stay which may be readily stamped-from sheet metal, and therefore manufactured at a low cost.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a stay which will eii'ectually prevent vertical and lateral movement of the Wires of a fence and which will include novel and efficient means for the Stringing of the top wire of the fence, usually a barb-wire.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a fence-stay constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same applied to a fence. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view taken on a line with one ofthe tongues of the stay.
Referring `to the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes a strip of sheet metal, preferably of spring metal, which is provided longitudinally with a rib 6, formed by crimping the said strip 5 longitudinally at its middle.
Stamped up from the portions of the plate 5 which lie upon the opposite side of the rib 6 i are tongues 7,the said tongues being crimped, as at 8, adjacent their connection with the said plate for the reception of the line-wires of the fence, the said wires being indicated by the numeral 9. The free end of each of the tongues 7 is bent slightly outwardly, as at l0, to permit ready engagement of the line-wires of the fence therewith, it being understood that that portion of each tongue which is located intermediate the crimped portion 8 and the bent portion 10 lies normally in a coml mon plane with the adjacent portion of the plate 5 from which it is stamped, the said Specification of Letters Patent. crimped portion and the curved end 10 lying beyond the said plate. The tongues 7 extend in opposite directions upon opposite sides of the crimped portion 6 of the platethat is, the tongues from one side of the said portion are directed with their free ends upwardly, while the tongues upon the opposite side of the said portion have their free ends directed downwardly, and it will be readily understood that a wire engaged with any one of either of these series will be held against vertical movement. Furthermore, it will be noted that by reason of the crimped portion or rib 6 of the plate 5 and the bend of the wire to conform to the shape of the same said wire will be eiIectually held against lateral movement.
To adapt the picket for the connection of a barb-wire therewith, I bifurcate the extreme upper end of the plate 5 at its middle and Vform through the said plate, as at 11, an opening, the said opening being located at the lower end of the bifurcation. It will be readily seen that by bending either one of the tongues formed by bifurcatmg the upper end of the plate 5 either forwardly orbackwardly the barb-wire (indicated by the numeral 12) may be engaged in the said opening 11.
What is claimed is- 1. A device of the class described comprising a strip of material having a rib extending longitudinally thereof, and tongues struck up from said strip upon each side of said rib and extending in opposite directions with respect to each other.
2. A device ofthe class described comprising a strip of material having a rib formed longitudinally thereof, and tongues struck up from said strip upon opposite sides of said riband extending in a vertical plane and in opposite directions with respect to each other.
