WIRE-FENCE STAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 486,950, dated September 23, 1890.
Application filed July 10, 1889. Serial No. 317,028. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW S. TARKING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulare, in the county of Tulare and State of California, have invented a new and useful Wire-Fence Stay, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wire-fence stay-ties and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a portion of a fence, showing my improved tie applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A A designate the fence-wires secured to the posts in the usual manner, and B designates the stay. This stay consists of a wire rod provided With an eye C at its upper end, which encircles the top fen ce-wire, and provided at intermediate points of its length with the lateral bends D, forming recesses, which receive the fence-wires, all as is common in fences of this character. Around these bends D,l coil my improved tie-wire E, the upper and lower ends of which coil are passed in opposite directions around the fence-wire, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3. The fence-wire will thus be securely held in the recess formed by the said bend and the stay secured to the fence. At the lower end of the stay-rod I preferably form an eye or ring F, which is adapted to encircle the bottom fence-Wire.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I use a very simple stay for wire fences, which can be manufactured ata slight cost, and by the use of which the fence-wires will be maintained at a proper distance apart and be prevented from sagging. The lateral bends ot' the stay prevent the fence-wires moving up or down,and this result is further insured by passing the ends of my improved tie-Wires in reverse directions around the fence-wires.
The eyes at the ends of the stay hold the top and bottom wires at the proper distance apart, and the intermediate wires are held at the proper distance apart by the shoulders, and the said shoulders may be formed in any desired number and at desired distance apart.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the fence-Wires, of the stay having lateral bends receiving said fence-wires and the securing-wires, each of the latter being coiled around the body of the stay throughout the length of said bend, and the upper and lower ends of said coil being led thence to and making several convolutions in opposite directions around the fence-wires on either side of the stay, substantially as described. l
