Description
E. HAVENHILL. Barbed Pence.-
Patented July 2,1878.
WITNESSES INVENTOR,
ATTORNEYS N.PETERS, FHDTOMTHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTUN D c NITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EDWIN HAVENHILL, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO PAUL SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARBED FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,635), dated July 2, 1878; application tiled June 1, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN HAVENHILL, of J oliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Barbed Fences 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and t0 the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawin is a representation of a perspective View of my barbed fence and blank of barb. Fig. 2 is a modification, perspective view, and blank.
The nature of my invention relates to the construction of sheetmetal barbs for wire fences, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
I confine my invention to Fig. 2, Fig. 1 being a modification.
From a blank, 0, of sheet metal, having a body of rectangular form and a triangular point, d, I cut a V-shaped opening extending from the base inward. The inner angle of this V-shaped opening is cut out, as shown at m, for the main wire B of the fence to lie in. The portions of the body left after the V- shaped piece has been cut outform the points (1 d at the base. These points d d are then bent in opposite directions, leaving a barb with three points pointing in three different directions.
In applying my improved device to a fencewire the main wire B passes through the rounded opening 00, and the tie-wire, passing over one of the prongs d and under the other, secures the barb to the fence in an efficient and easy manner, the wires being twisted, as is usual in such cases.
Suitable dies cut out the V-shaped piece, and also form the opening aat one operation.
The modification shown in Fig. 1 is formed from a rectangular blank cut out from opposite sides, leaving the rounded seat 00 for the main wire, as in the three-pointed barb.
1 am aware that three-pointed barbs formed from sheet metal blanks have before been known. I
My improvement consists in a circular seat to receive the main wire.
I claim as new- The wire-fence barb formed from the blank C,having the point d, the points cl (1, bent in opposite directions, and the circular opening 00, to receive the main wire B, adapted to be applied to a wire fence, as shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of three witnesses.
EDW IN HAVENHILL.
In presence of- PAUL SMITH, SEBASTIAN LAGGER, J r., CHARLES WILLIAM STAEHLE.
