CURTIS B. BRAINARD, OF J OLIET, ILLINOIS. I
BARBED WIRE FOR FENCES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 28%,091, dated' October 23, 1883,
Application filed May 1, 1883. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OURTIs B. BRAINARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed Wire for Fences, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2acrosssectional view, and Fig. 3 a perspective view, of a single barb detached from the Wire strands; Fig. 4, a view of a strip of fiat metal from in which it is cut up into blank barbs.
This invention relates to certain improvements in flat-metal barbs for fences, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification and claim.
In the drawings, a a represent the two strandwires. 0 represents the barb, formed of a thin piece of sheet metal out in the form shown particularly in Fig. 3, and having its central portion or body bent, as shown, to form seats 1" for the two strand-wires a a to rest on. The barb is provided with the two tongues or hooks s s,which are cut or punched out fromthe central portion or body of the barb, and have one end, toward the centerof the barb, left fast and integral therewith, While the other end is adapted to coil upon and clasp each strandwire, as shown, to hold the barb firmly upon and between the two strand-wires, thus forming a very neat, durable, and effective barb that canbe made at very small expense. These tongues or hookss 8 may, if desired, bothproject from the same side in the same direction.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
The two-pointed fiat metal barb described, having the bend r at its center, and the two hooks or tongues 88, formed of the centralportion or body of the barb and integral therewith, and adapted to clasp a strand-wireon either side of the barb, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
CURTIS B. BRAINARD.
