. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 19, 1907.
Application filed December 20,1906. Serial No. 348.793.
1'0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALBERT SOHAEFER, a citizen of the United States, residing. at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lids for Coflee- Pots and Similar Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciication, in which- Figure 1 shows the various members which form my lid, disassembled. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional view of the completed lid. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 4: shows a modified form of my invention, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the hingepiece.
This invention relates to lids or covers for coffee-pots, teapots, and other receptacles in which the lid is hinged to the receptacle.
The object of my invention is to provide a lid having a separate hinge piece or member connected thereto without the aid of rivets or solder, thereby reducing the cost of manufacturing the lid and also producing a neat and strong construction.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates a sheet-metal member of any desired shape and configuration adapted to act as a lid or cover for a receptacle, said lid comprising a flat ring-shaped portion 2, having a depending circular flange 3 formed integral therewith.
In the preferred form of my invention the portion of the completed lid that extends into the upper end of the receptacle to which the lid is connected consists of an independent ring 4, formed from a single strip of metal having its ends lapped, as shown in Fig. 3, said ring being provided with an outwardly-projecting flange 5, that contacts with the underneath side of the flat ringshaped portion 2 of the lid when the parts are assembled, as shown in Fig. 2. The hinge member consists of a flat piece 6, that is confined between the flat ring-shaped portion 2 of the lid and the flange on the ring 4, a web 7, that projects outwardly from the portion 2 of the lid when the hinge member is in position, and two lugs 8, depending from said web and provided with perforations to l receive the pintle' of the hinge. The outer edge of the part 6 of the hinge-piece is preferably shaped to conform to the curvature of the depending flange 3 on the lid, and said flange is cut away at 9, as shown in Fig. 1, to receive the web 7 of the hinge-piece, the part 6 of the hinge-piece being of greater length than, the width of the cut-out portion 9, so that the hinge'piece cannot be pulledout.
To assemble the different members or parts which form the complete lid, the hingepiece is first placed in position with the part 6 thereof arranged inside of the flange 3 on the lid and bearing against the underneath face of the flat ring-shaped portion 2 of said lid. The ring 4 is then placed in position with its flange 5 contacting with the, underneath side of the flat portion 2 of'the lid, and the depending flange 3 of the lid is then bent around the flange 5 on the ring 4, thereby securely connecting the ring to the lid and also confining the hinge piece in position by clamping it between the part 2 of the lid and the flange 011 the ring 4.
If it is desired to produce a lid which rests upon the upper edge of the receptacle to which it is connected and not provided with a part that extends into said receptacle, the ring at is dispensed with and the depending flange 3 on the lid is bent underneath the flat portion 2 to confine the hinge-piece in position and also stiffen the peripheral edge of the lid, this construction being shown in Fig. 4.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have produced a lid in which the hinge-piece is held in place without the aid of rivets or solder, thereby greatly reducing the cost of manufacturing the lid and also overcoming the possibility of the hinge-piece working loose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lid or cover consisting of a member provided at its edge with a flat ring-shaped portion, a ring having a flange which contacts with the underneath side of said portion, a hingepiece clamped between said parts, and means on said member for securing the ring in position; substantially as described.
2. A lid or cover consisting of a member provided with a folded edge having a portion of its periphery removed, and a hinge-piece having a portion arranged between the layers which form the folded edge of said member and projecting on each side of the cut-out portion in the periphery of said member; substantially as described.
3. A lid or cover consisting of a member provided at its edge with a flat portion and an integral portion which is bent underneath the flat portion, a member having a flange that is arranged between said portions, and a hinge-piece clamped between said flange and the flat portion of the member first referred to; substantially as described.
4., A lid or cover consisting of a member provided at its edge with a flat portion, a hinge-piece having a part in contact with said flat portion, and means integral with the flat portion of said member for securing the hinge-piece in position; substantially as described.
5. A lid or cover consisting of a member provided at its edge with a flat ring-shaped portion, a ring having a flange which engages the underneath side of said flat portion and is held in position by a portion on said member which is bent under said flange, the bent-under portion of said member being provided with an opening, and a hinge-piece consisting of a part that is clamped in position by the flange on said ring, and a web that projects outwardly through the opening in the bent-under portion of the member first referred to; substantially as described.
6. A lid or cover consisting of two co6perating members placed together, one of said members being provided with an opening to receive a hinge-piece, a hinge-piece having a portion arranged between said members and extending on opposite sides of said opening, and means for securing said members together substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 17th day of December, 1906.
ALBERT SCHAEFER.
