y thereby producing in effect a continuous upper wall edge, which, when covered, simu` lates a relatively thick wall. `The web, when bent into the desired form, presents a `continuous outer face and the ends of said web abut in the same plane .and are connected together. Likewise, the ends ofthe lower flange dcsirably abutagainst each other in the same plane as illustrated in Fig. 1. Preferably the abutting `ends4 of the web are provided with' interengaging means adapted to hold the ends ofthe strip from displacement during the manufacture of the box and also to kincrease, its rigidity after completion.. In
the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, the abutting ends are provided with complementary members of a do'vetail joint 6. Suitable means are also provided to secure the abutting ends rigidly together in the completed box. Such means may comprise a plate suitably securedto the abutting ends by intereiigaging members, by welding, or in any other desired manner. In the preferred construction illustrated each of the abutting ends is provided with one or more inwardly extending tabs 7 cut from and integral with the strip and adapted to engage suitable slots in the connecting plate. Desirably the abutting ends are connected together by the lower plate 8 ofa hinge, the tabs- 7 extending 'through suitable slots inthe plate and clinched down thereupon, as illustrated more clearlyin Figs. 7 and 8.
It will be noted that in the construction illustrated in Figsl, 2, 3, and 6, the upper flange presents in effect a continuous upper edge of uniform widthsimulating althick wall, while the lower flange provides arelatively' wide base for the wall to engage the base of the box. Covering material may be applied to the vertical member, which is to form the vertical outer face of the side wall, after it khasvbeen vgiven its structural shape and before the strip is bent to form the contour of the wall. fa lIn the constructionshown a sheet of covering material 9y extends beneath the lower flange 5 of the side wall, thence upwardly across the vertical face of the wall, thence over the upper llange forming the upper edge of the wall, around the edge thereof and upon the under facezof said flange. The covering material 2 of the base 1 also extends beneath the horizontal flange' and beneath the covering 9 of the sidewall so that both coverings are interposed-between the flange 5 and the base 1. Desirablythe covering material is ce meiited tothe base and side wall and the base may be securedfto the side wall by cemeiiting the contacting portions ofthe covering material. Desirably, however, interengaging means are provided for clamping the side wall and base together. In the preferred construction illustrated this is accomplished by providing a plurality of tabs 10 whichare connected to the base and are engaged with the side wall structure preferably by being bent over and down upon the lower flange 5 of the sidewall. The inner open face of the channel-shaped member desirably is closed by a collar 11, having a preferably satin covering 12, the lower edge of the collar being provided with laterally extending tabs 13 which rest upon and may be secured to the base. Fig. 7 shows a construction in which the side wall is formed by punching and stamping the same .from a fiat sheet of material. In producing a box of the rectangular form illustrated in Fig. 7,a rectangular sheet of the required size is p rovided, and a rectangular central portion'thereof cut out. The sheet isthereupon slitted from the corners of the cut-out Vspace to the point which is to form the 'inner edge 'of the `Webof'the channel. This construction comprises a web 28, an outer vertical flange member 29, vand an inner yflange memberjSO which desirably has a laterally extending lower vedge 3l which, when the strip is bent Lto form the box, eX- tends inwardly. Suitable notches 32 are pro* vided in the webf'member 28Vand theinner flangeymember 30, these -Vnotches being sode- L' theY desired form. f 1 4 Inl the construction shown infFig. 9, the web -28 is providedwith'two notches 33'and'34 separated by a truncated Veshaped projection 35, while the vertical flange 30 andthe li 3l are cut away in thep'lanes of theouter e ges ofthe notches 33 and 34. y These notchesV are made at suitable distances apart to provide signed .as to permit thestrip" to be 'bent into each notch abut and the V-shaped'extension 85 fills thecorner between the sides and' ends to produce an efectively continuous upper edge for the side Wall.
In the construction shown in Figs. v7 and'8,
the end portions of theweb and inner flanges y y are ,cutaway so that the outer'iiange 29 eX- tends a sufficient distance therebeyond to permit the attachment of the hinge plate 8 to the abutting ends ofthe vouter flange 29'. In this construction, 'as in that illustrated in Fig. l, the vertical outer'member of the side Wall is provided ywith inwardly 'extending tabs H 7 which pass through slots in the hinge platel and areclinched down thereupon.`
Obviously the base and side ,wall of the box illustratedy in `Figft may be provided with suitable covering` as above described. A suitable cover may also beprovided, preferably of a construction similar to that of the body of the box in order to produce a symmetrical appearance. v In Fig. 4 another embodiment of the invention is illustrated comprising a side wall of inverted channel form comprising a web 36, a vertical outer flange 37, and avertical inner flange 38. The `covering material 39 extends beneath the lower edge of the outer flange of the box, over the outer face of the flange 37,-` across the web 36 which forms the upper edge of the side wall, and downwardly along a portion of the inner flange 38. In this construction the base 40 of the box, which is provided with a covering: 41, extends beyond the periphery of the side wall 39 and is bent upwardly against such wall. In the constructionillustrated in Fig. 4, a `modified means for attaching thebase to the side wall is illustrated which comprises a recess 42 located in proximity to the lower edge of the wall 38 and a tab.43`,awhich ispartially out from the base and bent upwardlyand laterally therefrom, extends through the recess 42; Y
In the constructions disclosed in Figs. 3,
7, 8, and 9, the effective widthof the inner flange may be lessthan the width of theouter flange so that the complementary fastening .members uponthe base and inner flange, when interengaged, may` be caused to clamp the lower edge ofthe outer flange, which constitutes the face of the side wall, firmly uponthe base of the box. 1 Y `Fign illustrates another form of side wall of structural shape comprising a vertical web 44 and laterally extending` upper andflower , flanges 45 and 46. In this construction the upper flange 45 lextends inwardly to provide the side wall with an upper-edge presenting a rim simulating a thick wall, while'the lower edge extends outwardly from the web. 44. The 'base 47 asshownin this construction extends beyond the'outer edge of the flange 46and together with the covering material 48 of the base is bent around the edge 0f the flange 46 to form a seam securing the base-to the side wall.
' The foregoing structural shapes, as well as otherswhich might be described, may be employedV in accordancewith the invention herein disclosed. Obviously side walls of any desired thickness may be constructed` and the-side walls made of any desired shape, either circular, elliptical, or curved, rectangular, orirregular in shape, as the members ofthe flanges and web, or both, may be-suitably notchedto permit the bend- `ing of the material in such a manner as to produce a continuous and uninterrupted otherwise the 'structural shape of the wall provides increased rigidity of construction over the side walls of boxes heretofore produced from sheet material and also presents an edge of greater width and of more pleasing appearance.
The base, being formed separately and secured tothe side wall, desirably projects beyond the periphery of the side wall and may conform in contour thereof, or may be of a different shape. The boxes may be constructed with Vor without covering` material. When covering' material is employed it can readily be applied to the base and side walls respectively. As the side wall is made of strips ofstructural shape, the covering material canvbe applied thereto with a minimum amount rof bending which will permit the use of covering materials which have not hitherto been available for box coverings because of Ytheir inherentcharacteristics would not permit sufficient bending or stretching to enable them to be economically applied by machines designed for such purpose.
It will be understood that the selected embodiments of,V the invention which are disclosed herein are of an'illustrative character andare not restrictive, and that various changes in form, vconstruction and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claims. Y
. Having thus described the invention7 what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
l. An ornamental box for jewelry and the like comprising a base, a continuous vertical side wall of structural shaped material having a web and flanges extending laterally therefrom so positioned that one of the members thereof forms the upper edge of said side wall and presents a rim simulating a thick side wall of massive appearance, covering material on the outer face of said side wall and extending over and around the upper edge thereof, a base having its edge projecting beyond the periphery of said side wall, covering material on the outer face of said base extending around the edge thereof, and beneath the lower edge of said side wall, and means securing saidrbase to said side wall with the base covering therebetween.
2. An ornamental box for jewelry and the like comprising-a vertical sidewall formed of a structural shaped strip of material having a web and flange members, the vertical member thereof being bent to present a continuous outer face of predetermined form,
another member extending inwardly therefrom, havingfnotches with the edges thereof abutting, forming an upper edge of said sidek wall and presenting a rim simulating a thick side w-all of massive appearance, covering material secured to said strip extending over said rim and the outer face of said side wall and beneath the vertical member thereof, a base, covering material on the outer face kthereof extending around the periphery thereof and beneath said side wall, and means securing said side wall and base together.
3. A box comprising a vertical side wall formed of a strip of material bent to a predetermined form to present a continuous outer face with its ends abutting in the same plane, a hinge plate secured to the inner faces of and securing the same together, a base, and means securing said side wall and base together and proximity to the respective abutting ends, a
hinge plate having recesses receiving said tabs rigidly connecting said ends together,

and means securing said side wall and base together.
5. A box comprising a vertical side Wall formed of a structural shaped strip of material having a. web and flange members, the
vertical member thereof being bent to pre-V sent a continuous outer face and having its abutting ends united by a dovetail joint, a base, and means for securing said base to a flange member. Y
6. An ornamental box for jewelry and the like comprising a vertical sidewall formed of a structural shaped strip of material having a web and flange members, thevertical i member thereofbeing bent to present a continuous outer face and havingits ends abutf ting inthe same plane, inwardly 4projecting tabs partially cut from and integral with said vertical member located in proximity to said abutting ends, and a plate having recesses receiving said tabs rigidly connecting vsaid ends together, a base, and means for securing said base to a flange member.

An ornamental box for jewelry and the like comprising a vertical side wall formed of a channel-shaped strip kof material with the flanges thereof extending inwardly, the web` thereof beingbent to` present a continuous outer plane, the flanges being notched with the Y edges of the notches ofthe upper flange abutsecur d to and connecting said abutting ends,
overlying said abutting ends rigidly` face of predetermined form, withV the ends of said web abutting in the same a base, means securing said base to the lower flange of said channel, andacover having a complementary hinge plate, and means pvotally connectingssaid hinge'plates together.

An-,or'namental box for jewelry andthe like]k comprising -a vertical side wall formed ofy a :channel.-shaped strip of vmaterial with the ianges thereofextending inwardly, the web tiiereof'being bent to present a continuous outer face of predetermined form, the flanges being notched with the e-dges ofthe notches ofthe upper flange abutting to Aform a continuous upper edge of said side wall presenting ka lrim simulating a thickwall of massivefappearance, covering material extendinglover said rim and around the outer Y face of ysaidfside wall and beneaththe'lower notchesof the upper flange `abutting to form a continuous upper edge of vsaid side wall presenting a rim simulating athick wall of massive appearance, covering material extending over said rim and around the outer face of said side wall and beneath the lower ange thereof, a lbase, having itsV edge extending beyond the outer face ofsaid vertical wall, covering material on the outer face of said base extendin around the periphery thereof and beneath t e lower flange of said sidewall, and a plurality of tabs kextending from said base engaging said lower flange and acting therewith to clamp said side wall and base together with the kcovering material of said side wall and basetherebetween.
10. An ornamental box for jewelry and the like comprising a vertical side wall formed of a channel-shaped strip of material with the flanges there-of extending inwardly, the
web thereof being bent to present a continuj ous outer face of predetermined form, the Y flanges being notched with the edges of the notches of the upper flange 'abutting to form a continuous upper edge of said side wall presenting a rim simulating Aa thick wall of massive appearance, a base, meanssecuring said base to the lower flange ofsaid channel, a vertical collar secured to said base extending along and projecting above the rim of said side wall, and a filler within said box having its edges frictionally `engaging said collar.
y11. An ornamental box for `jewelry and the like comprising a Verticaly side wall formed of a channel-shap`ed strip of materialwith the flanges thereof extending inwardly, the
upper flange forming the upper edge of the` A side wall and presenting a rim simulating a thick wall, of massive appearance, a filler `secured within the upperfiange of saidv wall, means securing the lower flange of said side wallto said base, and a complementary` box of like construction hinged thereto and forming a cover therefor.
