The invention accordingly comprises anv article of manufacture possessing the features, proper-l ties, and the relation of. elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described (Cl. 22S-5.5)
and the scope of the application of which will'. be indicated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification and wherein similar reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the several views:

Referring now more specifically to the drawing, the drum part of the boxis indicated at a, the base part being indicated at b. At c is indicated a box cover which may be` employed. These parts are preferably'made .'of paper material, although it is to be understood that in respect to `certain of the box elements, as for instance the base herein described, other materials may be found useful, as for instance wood, metal, Bakelite, or other relatively hard materials.l The numeral 1 indicates the main body or lateral wall-.of the drum, the drum havingsome resilience transversely of its longitudinal axis. As illustrated, the drum wall -I may be 'cylindrical and is intended to surround and fit closely the flange 2 of the base b. Each of these parts,y namely, lthe drum a and the base b, are provided with devices for retaining them in assembled relation.
Referring to the drum a. the lateral wall'I thereof may be composed of a number of plies, laminations, or coils of paper in contact with each other, the wall being built up so asto be substantially rigid. longitudinal compression in the plane ofthe wall. The wall I is provided at its lower end with a retainer device consisting of a continuous circumferential retainer rib or shoulder I, this shoulder extending inwardly of the drum and running continuously around `its lower edge. In the embodiment illustrated,

However, itis to be understoodthatin-its broader aspects, the invention is not limited to the provision of the extended ends of the . plies 4 and 5,
although this is a preferable construction. The
entire thickness of the drum wall at its lower edge may be crimped without departing from the broader aspects of the invention.
In practice, the circumferential periphery 6, of one of the plies 5, is turned over the peripheral edge of the other ply 4, to strengthen the ultimate edge-of the crimp or shoulder. The crimp provides a rounded shoulder at the lower edge of the drum and continuously therearound, the lower edge of the drum thus having a retainer shoulder which is resilient and flexible. If desired, the paper of the crimped part may be sized to increase its density and resilience. The inner edge of the crimp or rib 3 preferably somewhat overlaps the outer cylindrical surface of the fiange 2 of the base b, so that, in the assembling operation, the rounded crimp or shoulder eases over the corner 'I of the iiange 2, and resiliently yields outwardly until the drum attains its ultimate assembled relation to the base b, whereupon the crimp springs inwardly to cooperate with the retainer device on the base and hold the drum and base together in assembled relation;
In the form illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the drum base, or base part, or closure part, b has the flange 2 resting onthe head 8 of the base and upstanding therefrom, this ange being a continuous ring disposed inside the marginal edge of the base, and being of solid, relatively thick structure and substantially rigid in its own plane longitudinally of the axis of the drum. In the embodiment illustrated the flange 2 is of laminated structure and includes the two circular laminations, or relatively thick paper strips 9 and I0, which-may-be adhesively secured together, the lower edge II of the lamination I8 being related to the head 8 so as to provide a retainer. shoulder, continuous circumferentially around the base and, in cooperation with the lamination 9 and said head, providing the retainer recess or groove I2 which is bounded by different laminations.
To guard against `theescape of powder through the joint between the lamination 9 and the head 8, a powder seal is provided. In the embodiment illustrated, a exible strip I3 of thin paper or other 'suitable sealing strimaterial is disposed across said joint, this strip extending peripherally around the base and being adhesively secured to the head of the base and to the ange 2. Preferably the strip I3 has it's upper margin held between the flanges 9 and I0, the strip following the wall of the recess I2 along the lamination 9 and the upper face of the head '8, and thence extending around the outer edge of the head 8 where it may serve to give a finished appearance to the edge ofthe head. The material'of the sealing strip I3 is preferably relatively soft, so that where the retainer'V device or crimp 3 on the drum contacts therewith, some sealing etlect may be attained. Thus, in addition to the sealing eiect on the joint between the lamination 9 and the head 8, should any powder seep between the lamination I0 and the wall of the drum it will tend to be prevented from escaping by the contact between the crimp or shoulder and the soft sealing strip. 'I'his sealing eiect 'isaugmented by 'the 'resilient c'haractm of strip I3.
The character of the base., or closure part, of the drum may be such as to be non-yielding to the pressure of interlocking between the retainer devices of the drum and base, and the base forms a substantially solid bottom, or base portion, of thebox. The marginal portion' I4 of the head 8, which is outside the drum, cooperates to form a member or wall of the retainer recess on the base, and lies in close contact with the retainer shoulder 3; of the drum and underneath such shoulder.
In the modica'tion illustrated in Fig. 4, the base may be generally at as shown, and composed of a plurality of superposed plies of laminations of relatively heavy, solid paper material,
suchv as pasteboard or paper and board, or the other material hereinbefore mentioned. 'Ihis generally at base may include the three plies, or lamiations I5, I6, and I'I, forming a plurality of solid, closure disks, which are rmly secured together .in relatively superposed relation to each other. Suitable adhesive may be used for such purpose. In this modication, the retainer recess, indicated at I8, is formed by offsetting the edges of the closure disks I5, I6 and I 1 relative to each other as indicated in Fig.. 6, the margins of the disks I5 and I1 each arranged to protrude outwardly beyond the margin of the intermediate disk I6 as indicated, thus forming the retainer recess I8. The margin of the disk I1 protrudes beyond those of the disks I5 and I6 to position under the lower end of the drum 28, as indicated at I9, which drum may be similar in construction to the drum described in connection with Figs. 1 and 42, and is provided at its lower edge with a similar retainer shoulder 3 or retainer crimp extending continuously around said edge.
In each modication the base protrudes from the open end of the drum, and the head of the base, illustrated in Fig. 2, also the bottom lamination of the base illustrated in Fig. 4, extends to position under the lower'- crimped edge of the drum, thus being adapted to limit the movement of the drum onto the base and cooperate with the crimp to assist in obtaining a tight joint between the base and drum. In the form illustrated in Fig; 4, the disks I5, I6 and -I1 areof diiferent diameters concentrically arranged and secured together so as to provide the retainer recess I8 and the extended. margin I9 of the bottom disk or lamination. Different-drums having crimps 3 of larger or smaller diameters may be quickly accommodated by using disks of different thickness to provide the retainer recess I8 of suitable dimension to accommodate any particular thickness of the crimp. In the recess I8, sealing material of any suitable character may be employed, as for instance, a strip of relatively soft, thin paper, similar to the sealing strip I3 and lying in the recess and adhesively secured in place around the baseas indicated at 38, in Fig. 6, and this strip may continue around the edge of the portion I9.
By constructing the flange 2 of the base of superposed plies or laminations, the grain of the ex'ible paper materials, of which thediierent plies may be composed, may be arrangedat angles to each other to lessen` any tendencyl of the ange to warp or get out of shape, and the ange may be strengthened by using one or more plies of selected, strong material. Also in addition to the provision of the retainer recess or groove I8 in the base, illustrated in Fig. 4, tendency of the assembled disks to warpls -lessened by the laminated structure and by selectingdisks of suitable material a strong and rigid base may be made which is not objectionably thick.
In the preferred construction of the box, the drum head 2| consists of a readily frangible sheet, such as tissue paper, translucent or transparent cellulosic material or other easily broken material, stretched over the top or open end of the lateral wall I of the drum and secured throughout its circumference to said wall, so as to form a powder-tight joint. In the present embodiment the frangible sheet 2| may have down-turned edges secured between and adhesively secured to laminations of the drum wall l, as indicated at 22.
When the drum and base are assembled with the retainer devices in cooperative relation, a complete, closed container part is formed, at one end of which is the base and at the other end is the frangible sheet 2|. especially to protect the frangible sheet against accidental puncture or breakage, and to protect the assembled elements over all, a box cover may be employed. This box cover may consist of a head 23 and a solid flange 24, which when 'applied over the assembled base `and drum will surround and protect the lateral wall of the drum and the head 2|, and may rest upon the projecting margin I4 of the bottom of the base.
In using the box, the drum is filled with powder before it is assembled with the base. After filling the drum the base is applied thereto and slid into the open end of the drum past the continuous shoulder or crimp 3, the rounded shape of the crimp 'facilitating the entry of the leading edge of the base into the opening in the drum, the shoulder on the drum being exed outwardly by contact with the lateral face of the base. By continuation of the assembly movement the retainer device or shoulder 3 of the drum will eventually move beyond the retainer shoulder of the base and will spring into interlocking engagement with the latter shoulder and into the retainer recess or groove I2. 'I'he outwardly extending margin I4 or I9 of .the bottom member of the base will limit the extent of relative assembling movement between the .base and drum, and on account of the resiliency and iiexibility of the crimp, said crimp may also be slightly deformed and will resiliently act to press itself closely against the contacting walls of the retainer recess or groove in the base so as to form a joint largely tending to prevent the escape of powder between the retainer devices of the drum and base. Thereupon thelbox cover may be applied over the head and lateralwalls ofthe drum and detachably secured thereto in any suitable manner, if desired. To
dispense the powder, the protective box cover is I rst removed. This will expose the frangible head 2| which may then be easily broken as by pressing the finger against the head 2|, to obtain access to the powder.
In the exemplary' modifications of the invention herein disclosed, it will be noted that the outer peripheral retainer grooves I2 and I8 are positioned adjacent to the lower edges of the side wall of the drum when the latter is in assembled relation with the base or closure member of the container. Also the retainer or interlocking shoulder 3 of the drum is positioned for interlocking engagement with the retainer grooves In practice and which, for this purpose, are preferably formed as shown with upper and lower shoulders cooperating with the interlocking element 3.
Since certain changes may be made in the article herein described and different embodiments of the invention could be made` withoutdeparting from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a container of the character described, the combination of a drum part having an opening at one end and a closure part for said opening, each of said parts having a circumferentially continuous retainer device, the retainer devices cooperable to interlock with each other and secure the closure in the opening by assembling movement between the parts, one of said parts having laminations oli-set relative to each other at their edges to form said retainer device thereon and a powder sealing strip secured between laminations of said part and disposed in contact with the retainer device of the other part in the assembledrelation of said parts.
2. Ina container of the character described,
the combination of a drum part having an opening, and closure means for closing said opening, said closure means including a closure part having relatively superposed, solid, upper, lower and intermediate closure disks secured together, the edges of said intermediate disk being off-set inwardly relative to the other disks to provide a continuous circumferential retainer groove having upper and lower shoulders.
3. In a container ofthe character described, the combination of a drum part having an opening, and closure means for closing said opening, said closure means including a laminated, solid closure part adapted for insertion in said opening and having in its edge a continuous, circumferential, retainer recess between diiierent laminations, for reception of the edge of said drum part, said drum part being resilient and having lat its open end a circumferentially continuous, rounded retaining shoulder adapted to enter said recess and resiliently maintain close contact with the wall of said recess.
4. In a container of the character described, the combination of a drum part having an opening, and means for closing said opening and retaining the closing means in closed relation, said means including a laminated, solid closure part adapted for insertion in said opening and having Vin its edge a continuous, circumferential, retainer recess between different laminations, for reception of the edge of said drum part, said drum part being resilient and having at its open end a circumferentially continuous, rounded retaining shoulder adapted to enter said recess and resiliently maintain close contact with the wall of said recess, one of said laminations having an outwardly extending marginal portion extending beyond the adjacent lamination and lying beneath and in contact with said shoulder in the closed relation between the drum part and closure part.

In a container of the character described, the combination of a drum, a substantially rigid base having a head and an upstanding, continuous, laminated, substantially rigid flange resting on said head inside the marginal edge of the head, the lower edge of th'e outer lamination terminating short of the next inner lamination to provide a retainer recess between said outer lamination and said ead in the outside face of said base.
6. In a container of the character described, tion f a drum, a substantially rigid base having ead and an upstanding, continuous, laminated, substantially rigid flange resting on said head inside the marginal edge ofthe head, the lower edge of the outer lamination being related to provide a retainer recess between the latter lamination and said head in the outside lateral face of said base, and a strip of flexible, powder sealing material sealing said recess from the joint between said flange and head.
'7. In a container of the character described, the combination of a drum, a substantially rigid base having a head and an upstanding, continuous, laminated, substantially rigid flange resting on said head inside the marginal edge of the head, the lower edge of the outer lamination being related to provide a retainer recess between the latter lamination and said head in the outside, lateral face of said base, said drum having an uprightly rigid, continuous wall closely fitting said flange and a resilient, continuous, retainercrimp carried by and of greater flexibility than said continuous wall and engaging in said retainer recess.
8. Ina container of the character described, the combination of a drum, a substantially rigid base having a head and an upstanding, continuous, laminated, substantially rigid flange resting on said head inside the marginal edge of the head, the lower edge of the outer lamination being related to provide a retainer recess between the latter lamination and said head in the outside, lateral face of said base, said drum having an uprightly rigid, continuous wall closely fitting said flange and `a resilient, continuous, retainercrimp of flexible material engaging in said retainer recess, said wall being of laminated structure, and having a plurality of laminations of thin flexible material protruding below the others and providing the material for said retainer-crimp.
9. In .a container of the character described,
the combination of a drum, a substantially rigid base having a head and an upstanding, continuous, laminated, substantially rigid flange resting on said head inside the marginal edge of the head, the lower edge of the outer lamination being related to provide a retainer recess between the latter lamination and said head in the outside lateral face of said base, and a strip of flexible,
powder sealing material sealing saidrecess from the joint between said flange and head, and held between laminations of said base and to said head.
10. In a container of the character described, the combination of a drum, a substantially rigid base having a head and an upstanding, continuous, laminated, substantially rigid flange resting on said head inside the marginal edge of the head, the lower edge of the outer lamination being related to provide a retainer recess between the latter lamination and said head in the outside lateral face of said base, and a strip of flexible, powder sealing material sealing said recess from the joint between said flange and head, said drum having an uprightly rigid, continuous wall closely fitting said ange and a resilient, continuous, retainer-crimp of flexible, sized material engaging in said retainer recess.
11. In a box of the character described, the combination of a drum-wall, open at each end, and a drum-base adapted for insertion in one end of the drum wall, for closing the opening in the drum, each of said parts being substantially rigid longitudinally 'of the drum, each part having a continuous, circumferential, retainer shoulder, the shoulders cooperable resiliently to interlock with each other by assembly movement between said parts, and a cover sheet of frangible material stretched over the opposite open end of the drum Wall and secured thereto throughout its circumference, said base' having laminations one of which provides a retainer shoulder inside said opening, and another of which cooperates with the lamination inside the opening to provide a retainer recess on the base for interlocking with said circumferential shoulder on the drum-wall.
12. In a box of the character described, the combination of a drum-wall and a drum-base adapted, the one for insertion and retention in thereof, said crimp being of greater flexibility than said drum wall.
13. In a box of the character described, the combination of a drum-wall and a drum-base adapted, the one for insertion and retention in the other, for closing the opening in the drum, each of said parts being substantially rigid longitudinally of the drum, each part having a continuous, circumferential, retainer shoulder, the shoulders cooperable resiliently to interlock with each other by assembly movement between said parts, the shoulder of said drum wall being a continuous, circumferential, crimp of an edge thereof, said crimp being flexible and of laminated structure having onela'mination extending beyond and turned over the edge of an adjacent lamination to form a retaining bead, the retainer shoulder on said base being unyielding to pressure from said crimp.
14. In a container, in combination, a drum part having a side wall and a lower opening, and closure means for closing said opening, said closure means including a closure part having laminations, one of which terminates at one edge portion short of an adjacent laminationto form at the outer periphery of the closure part a groove with an upper shoulder and positioned adjacent to the lower edge of said drum side wall when in assembled relation, said closure part having a bottom member with a peripheral marginal extension underlying the lower end of said drum side wall and forming a lower shoulder for said groove, andan interlocking member on said side wall interlocking in said groove.
