UNITED STATES GEoRGE .ELDER CRUMP, or s'PoKANE, WASHINGTON.
CHAIR. i
To all whom 'it muy concern:
' Be it known that I, GEORGE ELDER CRI-JMP, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and v4State of Vashington, have invented a new and Improved Chair, of which the following is a spec-iiication.
My invention, which relates generally to improvements in chairs, seeks to provide an improved bedroom or bachelor chair, more especially designed to 'serve as a coat, vest, and trousers hanger and trousersstretcher; and it comprehends generally an ordinary type of chair having its back provided with means for. supporting a coat and vest over the top thereof in the manner in which the ordinary coat-hanger supports the same and for supporting the trousers over the back of the chair with the upper and lower parts thereof clamped, whereby the same may be readily sustained in a stretched condition.
My invention in its more complete nature embodies a special construction of chair-top designed for sustaining a coat or vest in its ro erly-spread state and a clamping memlier iineed to the back for engaging and holding thebleg portions of the trousers combined with a clamp device on the bottom part of the chair for gripping and holding the body portion of the trousers.
Furthermore, my invention consists in certain details of construction and peculiar combination of plarts, hereinafter described, pointed out in t e claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chair, showing the manner in which the coat and trousers are hung thereon. Fig. 2 is a rear -view of the chair, showing the trousers hung thereon and stretched, the
hinged trousers-clamp being shown raised in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a front perspective view of the upper end of a chair constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the back of the chair and illustrating a slightly-modified construction of the hinged trousers-clamp. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the upper end ofthe chair on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2.
In the ractical application of my invention the c 'iair-bodypropermay be of any of the approved ty es of chairs, such as are usually found in bedrooms, the difference in structure being in the upper end of the chair- Speccation of Lettera Patent.

bach, which is higher than the ordinary chair.
In the simplest form of my invention the top rib or cross member a is wider than the ordlnaryfchar-top and its upper part a. is convened and is shaped in plan'and side vlew slmilar to an ordinary coat-hanger, with its ends, a.2 a.2 projected beyond the sides of the chair-back B', so that' aV coat/or vest can be readily hung thereon without wrinkling or getting out of its proper shape.
At a suitableV point below the upper or coat-hanging edge the crossrib has a horizontal recess c3, through which the lower end of the trousers-le s ma be readily slipped, and on the back o the ri a is hin ed a clamping member b, which in the simp est form, as illustrated in Fig. 3, is of a single piece with its lower edge b3 concaved, whereby to be in a plane parallel with the convexed face of the recess aa when the clamp is down, and the said lower end is covered with cloth, felt, or other yielding material whereby to form a tight grip on the trousers when closed down against the same, as shown in Fig. 2, by reference vto'which it will also be noticed the upper edge l5 of the clamp b is shaped to conform with the upper edgeof the chair, whereby to be in the plane of said edge when adjusted as iii-Fig. 2. The member b is hin ed at b 7 to the chair-back, and the other end as a detent b4 to engage a catch b5, whereby to be firmly held to its locked position when swung 4down to clamp the trousers-legs, as shown.
Instead of making the member b of one piece and covering its clamping edge with a yielding material the said member may be made of two pieces and the lower or clam ini-piece l2", as shown in Fig. 4, joined to t e ot er by the coiled spring c c.
So far as described it-will be readily apparent that by forming the upper part of a chair in the manner shown the coat can be easily hung over the back of the chair and sustained in a smooth and proper shape, the same as it is held when supported on the ordinary closet-hanger, and, furthermore, the trousers can be positively ,suspended with their body or heavy end pendent, this maintaining the coat and trousers in a good shape with but slight care required in hanging them on the chair, and when desired to hold the trousers stretched it is only necessary after the leg ends have been clam ed to secure the lower or body portion on t e lower part of lOO the chair, which in myv construction of chair can be easil accomplished by 4slipfing the body part o the trousers between t e cross baror rung as and the hinged clamp-bar a, that eoaets therewith, in the manner clearly illustrated by Fig. 5.
Having thus described myinventiom what 'I claim is 1. As an improvement in chairs, a back member therefor whose up er orl cross piece has a horizontal recess a apted to receive] one end of a garment and a clamping member mounted on lthe back of said cross-piece for engaging one part of the garment and clamping its end 1n. the said recess, and a clamping means on the lower part of the chair for engaging another part vof the garment. f v
2. In a chair of the character described,
the combination with the recessed back l piece; of the clamp member whose lower edlge e 1s straight, said member bein hinged tot back plece to swing down witg its lower edge in the plane of the recess in the back piece, a detent for holdi it to its down position, said lower edge E? the clamp member being yielding with 4respect to the recess in the chair-back, for the purposes described.
3. The combinatlon with the recessed back member; of the clamp member comprising a main portion hinged atone end to the recessed back piece, a lower portion, and coiled spring connections for joining the u per and lower ortions, and a detent on t e chairback fbx' locking theelamp member to its clamping'position, as set forth.
