IMPROVEMENT lN BUTT-HINGES.

$pecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 84,630, dated December 1, 1868.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. JENKs, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do loose-j oint reversiblehin ge, to be used for doors, blinds, shutters ,and for other suitable purposes,

so that the hinge may be used either as a right: hand orleft-hand hinge, as maybe desired; and its nature consists in providing each of the bowlsa and a with apivotor pintle, b, projecting toward the center, to receive either end of the bowl 0,.so that when the section or wing' D is applied to a door, window-blind, or other hinged article, it may be lifted or moved without detachment and still be detachable by stoppin in the proper osition.

To enable others sEilled in the art to make and use my invention, I proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A represents the fixed frame or casing to which one part of the hinge is attached, and B represents the door to which the other. part of the hinge is attached. The hinge is made in two parts, 0 D, as usual. The part 0 is provided with two bowls, a a, and two pivots, b b, one at the top and one at the bottom, as shown. The otherpart,D, has one bowl, o, centrally located, and of such size that it can be passed between the two pivots. b to its place on the lower one. 1

In Fig. l the hinges are arranged for a right-hand door but it will be observed that they can be easily arranged for use on a left hand door.

In use, as shown at the upper hinge in Fig. 2, thereis an open space, d. This I close with a piece of rubber, which may be cut from rubber tube by pressing the same into the opening d and over the pivot b, which holds it in place and completely fills the open space, as shown at E, Fig. 2.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

The arrangement and construction of the two wings of the butt, with their pivots, on the upper and lower bowl, pointing toward the center, with the recess for the other bowl, 0, by which the hinge or butt can be adjusted, substantially "as shown and described.
