Be it known that I, LEMUEL M. WHISEN- HANT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Monroe, and in the State of Alabama, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Flows, of which the following is a specification and exposition, which is sufficiently clear and concise as to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention consists in the several parts, the arrangement, shape, coniigurations, and combinations thereof, all substantially as herein shown and described and particularly pointed out.

The object of my invention, broadly speaking, is the provision of certain improvements in plows which will be neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable in construction, easily operated and controlled, and which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low price, at the same time materially increasing the efliciency of plows in connection with which my improvements are employed.

More particualrly my object is the provision of a frog for plows for retaining` the plowshovel in its proper alinement without danger of its becoming loosened or displaced inadvertently and means whereby the shovel may be retained in place by the employment of a single bolt, and, finally, my object is to provide new and useful improvements in plow-standards and means for attaching the standard to the beam and also the means for attaching the plow-shovel to the standard.

Other objects and particular advantages will be made apparent in the course of the ensuing specification, and the points that are new will be set forth in the appended claim.

For a thorough understanding of this invention reference may be had to the accompanying one sheet of drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a plow and showing my invention in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the parts shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the invention. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of my plow-standard shown with the shovel and the attaching means therefor removed. Fig. 5 is a detail side view of my retaining-frog, and Fig. 6 is a front elevation of my retaining-frog.

Similar reference characters denote like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

In order that my invention may be fully understood and its many advantages comprehended, l will now take up a detail description thereof, in which l will describe the several parts and their operations as briefly and as compactly as l may.

ln the drawings the letter A designates a portion of a plow-beam having in its rear portion extending up from its under face an angular mortise a.

The numeral l denotes my plow-standard,

having its lower end curved slightly forward and being slotted from its upper 'end downward to near its lower end, as shown in Fig. et. Said slot is denoted by the indice t and is of a width the same as is the width of the beam A, which it is intended to stride, as shown, and secured thereto by the bolts B and O.

The numeral 2 denotes a brace, its upper end being secured by the bolt D in the mortise a of the beam, and its lower end is secured by the bolts E and F in the slot l) of the standard.

The letter G denotes a plow-shovel, having formed therethrough a bolt-aperture in its upper central portion.

The numeral 3 denotes a headed bolt adapted to be inserted through said aperture in the shovel, with its head contacted with the face of the shovel or countersunl; flush therewith. Said bolt 3 projects rearward through the lower portion of the slot l), with a nut 3 threaded on its rear end contactible with the rear face of the standard or with a washer therebetween, which washer should be a part of the frog hereinafter described.

The immoral 4 designates the frog, having a central shank, an upper cross end, and a lower washer portion. The upper cross end of the frog forms a lug having a forwardlyprojecting brow to engage over the upper edge of the shovel, as shown in Fig. l. A notch 5 is formed across the face of the standard, at the upper edge of the shovel, for the rear edge of said lug to rest in when the shovel is secured in place.

From the above description it is apparent that the shovel may be secured to the standard in workable position, first placing the frog through the slot l) and bringing the lug of the frog in contact with the upper edge of the shovel, the lower or washer portion of IOO the frog beingincontact With the rearface of the standard. Now by inserting the bolt 3 through the aperture in theshovel, then through the slot b, and then through the eye of the washer "portion of the frog it is apparent that by running the nut 3 on the bolt 3 the shovel will be clamped against the face of the standard, as shown, and also the lug of the frog will be tightly engaged with the upper edge of the shovel, and by reason of said lug resting in said notch of the standard the shovel will be locked in position, from which position it may not be inadvertently moved.

My invention is perfectly adapted to accomplish the purposes for which it is intended, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the speciiic I construction herein shown and described may be made and that analogous parts may be used to accomplish the same results without departing Jfrom the spirit of my invention or sacriiicing any oi' its many advantages, and the specific construction of the details of my invention in which novel features are embodied may be variously changed Without altering the essential principles which are claimed as new and useful.

In a low, the combination with the longitudinal y-slotted standard having a transverse notch formed across the forward face of its members at either side of the slot, of a downward projecting shovel disposed at the lower end of said face with its upper edge adjacent said notch, a frog consisting of a transverse head lying in said notch and overlying the upper edge of the shovel, a shank extending rearward and downward from said head through the slot of the standard, and a rear washer portion bearing against the rear face of said standard, a bolt passing through the shovel, .standard-slot and said washer portion, and a nut engaging the end of the bolt.
