UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN R. DAVIS, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE SOUTH BEND IRON WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,393, dated August 21, 1900. Application filed April 6, 1900. Serial No. 11,861. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN R. DAVIS, a resident of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in plows, the object of the invention being to so construct the standard of a plow and so connect it to the plow-beam that when a rigid obstruction is struck the standard will be swung back on the beam and not break, as is the case with devices of similar character heretofore known.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements in position for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position of the parts after having struck a rigid obstruction, and Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line 00 0c of Fig. 1.
A represents a plow-beam, andB my improved standard connected thereto, the said standard being shaped and constructed to receive the point, moldboard, and landside in the usual manner. The upper end of the standard 13 where it is disposed against the lower face of the beam A is provided with a forwardly-projecting perforated enlargement 1, said perforation being in alinement with a hole in the beam A, and a bolt 2' is passed through said enlargement and beam and through a washer 3 on top of the beam and is secured in place by a nut 4. The enlargement 1 and, in fact, every part of the standard B is of greater strength than the bolt 2,
so that the latter will break before the stand ard for a purpose which will more fully hereinafter appear.
The standard B is provided on its upper end with a rearwardly-projecting looped portion 5, made cylindrical or circular in crosssection and secured in the curved or hooked end 6 of a bolt 7, which latter is disposed in a hole in the standard, passed through a .washer 8 on the upper edge of thebeam A, and
as heretofore constructed of which Iam aware;
but owing to the fact that the bolt 2 is purposely made of less strength than the standard the former will give way and permit the standard to swing back, with the hooked portion 6 of the bolt '7 serving as a bearing for the looped portion 5 of the standard, as shown in Fig. 2, and not injure the standard in the slightest, and the operator has simply to replace the broken by a new one with but slight trouble and expense, and the plow will then be in as perfect condition as before.
It will be seen that by employing my improvements the great trouble and expense of broken standards, which is so common with plows now in use, is entirely obviated, because with my improvements it is practically impossible to break the standard while plowing.
Various slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
- Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a plow-beam and a standard having a seat at its upper end against the under face of the beam, of a bolt pivotally connecting the rear portion of the standard to the beam and a bolt weaker than the standard securing the forward portion of said standard to the beam.
2. The combination with a plow-beam and a standard seated at its upper end against the bottom face of said standard, and perforated lugs projecting forwardly and rearward from the respective ends of the seat portion of the standard, of a bolt passing through the rear end of the standard and having a hook depending from the beam and engaging the rear lug of the standard to pivotally connect the latter to the beam and a 10 breakable bolt passing downwardly through the beam and through the forward lug of the standard.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' CALVIN R. DAVIS.
