UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE REID, F REESE, MICHIGAN.
HARROW OR CULTIVATOR TOOTH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,845, dated August 9, 1887. Application filed June 8; 1887. Serial No. 240,615. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, GEORGE REID, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Reese, in the county of Tuscola and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Harrow and Cultivator Teeth, of which the following is' a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harrow'and cultivator teeth; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, whieh fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a harrow-tooth embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is avertical longitudinal section of a portion of the device, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the clip or holder.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the harrowbeam, and B the tooth. The tooth is made of suitable steel and is provided with the extension 0, which is bent around the beam in an approximatelysemicircular shape and back to the rear side of the tooth. The end of the extension 0 is provided with the forwardly-projecting ears or lugs D, which lie against the opposite edges of the tooth, and thereby prevent lateral play of the spring-extension O.
E designates the clip or holder consisting of the plate F, bolted to the back or rear side of the beam, and having'the wings G H prothrough which the tooth is passed, and the tooth issecured in the holder by means of a set-screw, K, inserted through the plate F and the beam and bearingagainst the tooth just in rear of the front side of the opening J in the lower wing, H, of the holder.
It will be observed that my tooth and the spring to hold it to its work are integral with each other and bent in such a manner as to prevent the accumulation of stubble thereon,
and the tooth is without joints or holes, which would impair its strength. It will also be readily seen that by securing the tooth by a set-screw, as shown and described, I am onabled to readily adjust the device so that the tooth will enter the soil'to a greater or less depth, as may be desired. It will further be observed that the openings J are angular or square, and that the set-screw binds against the tooth at one point only. This construction is ,found to be very advantageous when the harrow or cultivator is being drawn backward to adjust it to position, as the upper end of the tooth being free to swing backward, the lower end springs readily forward, thus preventing the clogging and sticking which would otherwise result.
My device is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and can be manufactured at a slight cost.
My invention is designed especially for use upon wheeled cultivators or harrows.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The colnbination, with the beam, of the holder secured thereto, the tooth inserted through the holder, and the set-screw inserted through the holder and the beam and bearing against the rear side of the tooth, as and for the purposes set forth.
. 2. The combination, with the beam, of the holder bolted thereto and having the for wardly-projecting wings, the tooth inserted through said wings, and the set-screw inserted through the holder and the beam in the plane of the lower wing and bearing against the tooth, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE REID. Witnesses:
J. J. (has, L. M. SHERWOOD.
