T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL A. Gononn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belgrade, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevises, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in clevises and has relation more particularly to a device ofthis general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with draft riggings and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character ofa simple and comparatively inexpensive nature having novel and improved means whereby the same may be applied with facility into operative position and whereby the strength of the members with. which it coacts is in no way impaired. v
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and. otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefullydefined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accom panying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a clevis constructed in accordance with my invention in operative position; Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view in top plan of the device as shown in the preceding figures; Fig. 4: is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on a reduced scale taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
In the embodiment of my invention, as disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a back plate adapted to bear against the rear face of a doubletree A or the like and having extending forwardly from its lower longitudinal edge portion, at substantially the center thereof, an elongated arm or tongue 2 adapted to bear against the under surface of the doubletree A, such back plate 1 and arm or tongue 2 being provided,

respectively, with apertures 3 and 4 through which suitable anchoring means 5 may be passed to effectually hold the same against displacement from the doubletree.
Integrally produced with the upper marginal portion of the back plate and disposed substantially parallel with the tongue or arm 2, is the frame member 6 substantially rectangular in form and having its bottom wall 7 and forward wall 8 of greater transverse diameter than the top wall 9 and rear wall 10 thereof. The bottom wall 7 is adapted to lie upon the upper face of the doubletree A and, as herein disclosed, is provided with the oppositely directed lateral ears 11 provided in their free end portions with the apertures 12 through which additional anchoring means 1 1 are adapted to be passed to further assist in maintaining my improved clevis against displacement from the doubletree A. The arm or tongue 2 and the bottom and top walls 7 and 9 of the frame member 6 are of a leggth greater than the transverse diameter of" the doubletree A, and the projected portions thereof are provided with the vertically alined apertures or perforations 15 through which is adapted to be passed the headed pintle or bolt 16 for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
Positioned within the frame member 6 and capable of oscillatory movement therethrough is, as herein disclosed, the substantially U-shaped frame 17, the base 18 whereof is provided on its outer face with the elongated barrel 19 through which the pintle or bolt 16 is adapted to be passed to create the requisite pivotal connection between such frame 17 and the frame member 6. The frame 17 is adapted to straddle a swingletree B or the like and in order that the framemay be effectually held against displacement, I provide the base 18 and the -stems 20 thereof with the oppositely directed ears 21 provided with suitable openings 22 through which the anchoring means 23 are adapted to be passed.
The forward wall 8 of the frame 6, as herein disclosed, is of greater thickness than the remaining walls of such member and is provided in its inner face with a vertically directed groove or channel 24, substantially semi-circular in cross section and which Is adapted to accommodate the barrel 19 of the frame 17, the longitudinal marginal portlons 25 of the mner face of such rear wall 8 being disposed in outwardly diverging planes whereby the oscillatory movement of the frame 17 is limited by cont-act of the base 18 therewith, as is believed to be clearly apparent.
The pintle or bolt 16 is adapted to be held against displacement in any manner desired and, as herein disclosed, I show the lower extremity thereof suitably threaded to receive the clamping or retaining member 27, herein shown as a conventional bur or nut. In order to provide a reinforce between the projected portions of the arm or tongue 9 and the base 7 of the frame 6, I surround that portion of the pintle or bolt 16 therebetween with a sleeve or barrel 27.
In view of the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that the bolt or pintle 16 does not at any time pass through either thedoubletree A or the swingletree B and thus avoids the necessity of producing in the same the openings, as are now generally re quired, whereby the strength of such doubletree and swingletree is in no wise impaired and it is also to be observed that in order to apply or remove the swingletree, it is only necessary to withdraw the pintle or bolt 16.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a clevis constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by r ason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practlce.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described including a plate provided with securing means, a frame carried by such plate, a substantially U-shaped frame positioned within and movable through the first named frame, a barrel carried by the outer face of the base of said U-shaped frame, and apintle carried by the first named frame and directed through the barrel whereby said U- shaped frame is pivotally supported relatively to the main frame, the adjacent wall of the main frame being provided with a channel to accommodate the barrel.
2. A device of the character described including a plate provided with securing means, a frame carried by such plate, a substantially U-shaped frame positioned within and movable through the first named frame, a barrel carried by the outer face of the base of said U-shaped frame, and a pintle carried by the first named frame and directed through the barrel whereby said U-shaped frame is pivotally supported relatively to the main frame, the adjacent wall of the main frame being provided with a channel to accommodate the barrel, the marginal portions of such Wall of the first frame to either side of the channel being disposed in outwardly diverging planes with which the base of the U-shaped frameis adapted to contact.
