WHlFFLETREE-HOOK- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD PYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiifletree-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hooks for the ends of whiffletrees to receive the loop on the end of the trace or tug, and has for its object the provision of a hook reasonable in cost, simple in construction and operation, and durable in nature.

The construction and advantages of my invention will be fully explained hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in 'which Figure l is a side view of an end of a whiffletree with my improved hook in position; Fig. 2, a view in section of the whiffletree on the line w of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3,-a detail view of the keeper of my hook; Fig. 4:, a view of the blank from which the keeper-support and spring are constructed, and Fig. 5 a top plan view of the keeper-support after being shaped from the blank shown in Fig. 3.

In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

A represents a whiiiietree, and B a ferrule secured to its end.

G represents a hook secured through the ferrule B and the end of the whifiietree, thus acting as a rivet to hold said ferrule on the end of the whiffletree. The end of the hook C is beveled to an edge, as shown at c.

D represents ametal blank from which is made the keeper-support E, having the perforated ears F, between which are pivoted the keeper G by means of rivet H. The free end of keeper G has a beveled groove 9 therein to receive the beveled portion 0 of the hook C, while its base is formed with a flat surface I to normally seat on leaf-spring formed Patent No. 792,925, dated June 20, 1905.

by bending the tongue J of blank D between the ears F. 'At each side of the Hat surface I is formed an enlarged curved projection K, which serves to depress spring J when keeper G is swung to either side and also to form a bearing-surface for said spring to return the keeper to its normal position after being swung.

L represents a large tongue on the end of support E, which is perforated to receive a screw or rivet M to secure it in position. In placing the support E on the whiffletree A a recess N is preferably formed and the tongue L secured in such a position that when the ferrule B is driven on it covers said tongue, and thus holds the screw or rivet M in place.

, Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with a whiffietree-hook, a keeper and its support consisting of a base portion secured to the whiffletree, a tongue integral with said base and bent back thereon to form a spring, ears extending upwardly at each side of said spring-tongue, and a keeper pivoted between said ears and seated on said. spring-tongue, substantially as shown and described.

2. In combination with a whiffietree, and a ferrule on the end thereof, a hook secured through said ferrule and the whiffletree end, a keeper-support having a perforated tongue to receive a securing-screw, said tongue adapted to seat under said ferrule, a spring-tongue integral with said keeper-support, upwardlyextending ears on each side of said springtongue, and a keeper between said ears having a base with a flat bottom and curved sides seated on said spring-tongue, substantially as shown and described.
