Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. SCHMIDT, a citizen-of the United States, residing at fModesto, inthe county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented a new and useful Nail-Holding Attachment for Driving- Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and .exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
` -The invention relates to nail-holding` at# tachments for hammers or any driving-tool for nails, tacks, and the like, and has for its object to provide a device of lthis character which will hold nails by their heads while being started into the wood into which they are to be driven. l
x `In the drawings forming part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a erspective view of my invention shown app ied to a hammer. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig.'3 is a detail view of the attachment disengaged from the hammer. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my invention, showing two sizes of nail-holding slots. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view Fig. 6 is a view of my invention, showing a modified form. Fig. 7 is a'detail perspective view of the nailholder shown'in big. 6.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the base of the hammer attachment, being of tapering thickness, as shown at'2, and provided u on oneside is a lurality of ointed lugs 3, w ich are adapte to be forced) into the `handle of the hammer for the purpose of coperating with the eye of the hammer in preventing displacement of the attachment. The base portion 1 is connected with the body portion 5 by a connecting portion 4, as Vshown in Figs. 1 and 2. The body portion v5 is provided with a V-sha ed slot 6, .which engages the head of the nai or tack to be driven, as will be readily understood.
Figs. 5 and 6 show the body portion 5 pivotally connected with the base portion l-by a pivot 4a, by which the said body portion 5 maybe rotated, thus aording means for engaging the heads of large or small nails, the said body portion being provided with a slot at each end, which are of diiierent shapes and sizes and may be varied according to the use to which the device may be put, and one slot may be ada ted to hold nails and the other' maybe muc smaller for the use of tacks and the like. The slotted plate or body ortion y 5, as shown in Fig. 5, is provided with ugs 5,
which engage recesses for the purpose of holding the portion 5 against rotation. Thepor-y be'readily sprung, so as to disengage the lugs 5a from the recesses when it is desired to rotate the same.
In Figs. 6 and 7 the body portion or plate 5 ltion or plate 5 is of course resilient and can is somewhat elongated, which admits ofbeing bent upon itself, whereby it by being placed on the proper part of the hammer can coperate with the claws of the same in holding the nail more securely for starting the same. The eye of the hammer is recessed,
as at 9, for the reception of the base portion of the device.
