aient @if JOHN Q. CROSBY, OF NORTHBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters .Patent No. 84,536, dated December 1, 1868.
IMPROVE!) LIFTING-JACK.
The Schedule referre to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom tt rmal/1,1 concern Be it known that I, JOHN Q. CROSBY, of Northborough7 in the county of WVorcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Wagon- Jack and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to improvements in jacks, such as are used for raising the wheels of wagons ofi' the' ground, the object of which is to simplify the same.
It consists of an improved arrangement of the operating-lever, as hereinafter described.
The drawing 4represents a side elevation of my improved jack,
A represents the vertical support, rising up from the bed B in the usual manner, andprovided with the brace C, to resist the lateral strain due to the action of the lever in the rst portion of the movement of the slide D, arranged against the slide of the vertical support, into which the said brace is secured.
The slide is provided with a yoke, E, taking around `the upper end of the part A, and sliding thereon while maintaining the slide in its vertical position.
F represents the lever, having its fnlcrum on the axle of the rollers G, and connected, by its i ngular arm, H,
o the lower end of the slide.
The said arm, and a portion of the other of the lever, are birurcated, to admit of the necessary movement of the lever in raising the slide, which would otherwise be obstructed by the post.
The slide D is slotted where thebrace C passes through it, to admit of its vertical movement, and this arrangement also serves toguide the slide laterally.
When the slide is raised by forcing the lever down into the position represented in red in the drawing, the movable fulcrum will be drawn to a point slightlyT beyond the vertical line of the joint-pin I, as is also shown in red, when the shoulder between the bifurcated parts of the lever F will strike against the post A, or the lever F will strike the bedB, and maintain it in that position, and causing it to hold the slide in a vertical position, as will be' clearly understood by inspection of the drawings.
Having thus desclibed my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The rollers G, in combination with the lever F, substantially as described for the purpose specied.
The above' specification of my invention signed by me, this 18th day of September, 1868.
JOHN Q. CROSBY. Witnesses:
SAMUEL CLARK, W. W. CROSBY.
