HORSE-HITCHING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, JACOB E. HUGUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IrIorse-I'litching Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accomp an ving drawings,
My invention relates to improvements in horse-hitching devices, and will be fully understood from the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof, and in which--Y- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through compartment 3. Fig. 3 is also a vertical section showing approximately the position which a rope hitching-strap occupies in my device. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the ropeclamp used in my hitching device.
As will be readily understood from aninspection of Fig. l, my hitching device consists of a housing 1, having two compartments therein, 2 3, in each of which is swinging-ly mounted a pendant clamp 2 3. Each clamp has a hole through the same near the top for the reception of the pin 4, which is located near the top of the housing and upon which said clamps are loosely mounted, so that they are free to swing, and from which pin said clamps are pendent, each with its rounded lower end in close proximity to the floor of its respective compartment, which iioor is preferably ,slightly convex.
When my device is to be used for hitching a horse, the clamp is swung outward, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the bitching-rope is inserted in the direction indicated by the arrow in said Fig. 3.. The clamp is then released, so that it rests upon the rope, and when the rope is pulled in the direction opposite to that indicated bythe arrow it is clamped tightly between the bottom of the clamp and the floor of the housing.
The clamping or contact face of clamp 3 has a groove G, which especially adapts it to conform to a rope, and at the center of said face is formed a projection I), which insures a firmer and more certain grip upon the rope. The clamp 2 has a plain convex clampingface, which adapts it to the clamping of a strap, and it is this combination of the two forms of clampwhereby my device is adapted to the holding of the two forms of hitch ing-strap in common use, which constitutes the main feature of novelty in my device, though other novelties of construction will be hereinafter set forth.
The housing l of my device is provided with a cover or roof 5, which serves the double purpose of protecting the pin from the elements, thus preventing it from rusting and snow and ice from collectingupon the clamps, and also prevents the clamp from swinging clear over, but arrests it at the position shown in dotted lilies in Fig. 3. If some provision of this sort were not made, it would be possible for the horse to throw its head up and jerk on the hitching-strap in such a manner as would cause the clamp to be thrown clear over and come down upon the other side of the center line of the device, in which case the hitching-strap could be easily pulled out and the horse thus released. Hence the utility, e'lliciency, and safety of this feature of my construction is readily apparent.
Upon one side of the bottom of my device is provided a bracket or wing (5, by means of which it may be attached to a. post or other suitable device provided for this purpose.

In a horse-hitching device, a housing having two compartments therein, each of said compartments having continuous vertical or side walls and a convex floor, a swinging, pendent clamp in each of said compartments, the lower end or face of each of said clamps being convex, and in close proximity to said floor, there being a groove formed in said lower face of one of said clamps, and a downward projection located in said groove, for the purpose specified.
