JOHN L. SIMPSON, OF MARION CENTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONIB-FASTENER.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented 4Feb. 12, 1907.
Application filed May 28. 1906. Serial No. 319,167.
T0. all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN L. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion Center, in the county of Indiana and j State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Comb-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to comb-fasteners, and more particularly to side and back-comb fasteners, the object being to provide the comb with fastening means which will securely hold the combv in place 'without any danger of loosening the same.
rlnis invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a comb provided with my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing the fastening member in position to engage the hair. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing the fastening member thrown out of position to engage the hair. Fig. l is a section taken on lines 4 7 of F ig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the lines 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a section taken on lines 6 6 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 7 is a section taken on lines 7 7 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A indicates an ordinary comb provided with an outwardly-projecting lug A, at one end adapted to extend into the opened upper portion of the hollow metal tooth B and be securely riveted therein. The toothB is provided with an open outer edge having an enlarged closed point B, forming a shoulder B2. An armO is mounted in the hollow tooth adjacent the opened side, provided with a curved upper end O and an angled lower end O2, adapted to extend through an opening B4, formed in the inner edge ofthe tooth B, and bear against the adjacent tooth, completely closing the slot between the same. A iiat spring D is secured in the tooth B under the curved end C2 of the arm, adapted to normally hold the angled end across the slot. It will be seen that when the comb is desired to be placed in the hair the user places her thumb on the curved end of the arm, which will draw the angled end of the arm out of the opening and into alinement with the shoulder of the point, which will allow the comb to slide easily into the hair, and by removing the thumb from the arm the spring will force the angled end of the arm through the opening across the slot and securely lock the comb in place. At the sanle time the arm passing out of alinement with the outer edge of the point will allow the shoulder to engage the hair.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have`provided a very novelfastener for a comb, which can be placed on either end of the comb or the middle and used with the same results.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a comb, of a hollow tooth secured to said comb and an arm pivoted in said tooth adapted to engage the adjacent tooth, for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a comb, of a hollow tooth carried by said comb, provided with an opening, and a spring-actuated pivoted arm mounted in said tooth provided with a hooked end adapted to extend out 'through the opening in said tooth across the slot between the teeth, for the purpose described.
3. The combination with a comb, of a hollow tooth secured to one end of said comb provided with an Opened outer edge, an arm mounted in said tooth adjacent said edge, having an angled lower end adapted to eX- tend out through an opening in the tooth, and a spring for holding said end into engagement with the adjacent tooth, for the purpose described.
4. The combination with a comb, of a hollow tooth secured thereon provided with an enlarged point forming a shoulder, an arm pivoted in said tooth provided with an angled end and a spring arranged in said tooth adapted to force the angled end through an opening in the tooth into engagement with the adjacent tooth, for thepurpose described.
