SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR PINS, CLASPS, 8w.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA H. JOHANNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Pins, Clasps, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an improvement in safety attachments for pins, clasps, and the like.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision of a simple and improved device which will serve to prevent accidental disengagement of the pin from its keeper.
In the drawings, wherein a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated and wherein like numerals of reference refer to similar parts of the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pin provided with the safety attachment, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the pin, the keeper being shown in section.
A represents the body of a pin or clasp, which may be of any suitable character and which has pivotally secured thereto the usual securing pin B.
C designates a keeper with which the free end of the pin B is adapted to be engaged in the usual manner. The keeper .0 comprises a rigid metal loop of the usual construction, which is positioned in a plane transverse to the body portion of the pin and is provided with a downwardly turned curved lip under which the free end of the pin B is adapted to be engaged. The upper portion of the keeper C is provided with an opening or recess 0 therein and the clownwardly curved lip thereof is provided on its outer surface with a groove or channel which leads to the opening or recess 0.
D designates a guard which is utilized to close the open side of the keeper G to Specification of Letters Patent.

prevent disengagement of the pin B therewith. The guard D comprises a curved piece of slightly resilient metal, the lower end of which is pivoted adjacent the lower end of the keeper G. The guard D is pivotally mounted so as to swing in a plane coincident with the plane of the keeper C and the upper end thereof is provided with a downwardly extending projection (Z which is adapted to snap into the opening or recess 0 in the top of the keeper when the guard is moved to a position to lock the pin against disengagement from its keeper. As the guard is moved to this position the projection (Z thereof will first engage the groove or channel 0 which is formed in the top of the keeper C, said groove or channel serving to insure the proper engagement of the guard with the keeper when pressure is applied thereto. The outer end of the guard D is provided with an outwardly projecting finger piece (Z so that the same may be readily disengaged from the keeper when it is desired to remove the pin therefrom.
lVhile a convenient embodiment of th'e invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it will be appreciated that many changes may be made to the form and construction therein shown without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim 1- The combination with a keeper provided with a downwardly turned lip having a recess therein and a guide groove leading to such recess, of a pivoted resilient guard provided with a downwardly extending projection adapted to engage the guide groove in said keeper and to snap in the recess therein when the guard is closed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRA H. J OHANNES.
