GARBAGE-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907.
Application filed April 6, 1906. Serial No. 310,220.
To (ti/Z w/wm 2125 may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ PosTHoFr, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the borough of the Bronx, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garbagecans in which the covers are retained or released in connection with a bail on the can, so that by the simple swinging of the bail from one side of the can to the other the cover is retained in closed positionor permitted to be removed from the can and for this purpose the invention consists of a garbagecan, the body of which is provided with perforated ears at diametrically opposite points, a cover, a bail pivoted .to said ears, and means for retaining or releasing the cover when the bail is swung from a position on one side of the can to a position on the other side of the same; and the invention consists,-further, of a garbage-can the body of which is provided with perforated ears having inwardly-projecting cams, a cover, and a bail pivoted to said ears, the pivots being provided likewise with inclined cams adjacent to the cams on the ears, so that the pivots are moved in connection with the bail by the cams on the ears in inward direction over the rim of the cover for retaining the same in closed position or in outward direction in the ears for permitting the removing of the cover, according as the bail-wire is swung into position on one or the opposite side of the can-body.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved garbage-can, showing the cover in released position for permitting its removal from the can-body. Figs. 2 and 3 are. plan views of the garbage-can, showing the bail-wire respcctively in position at opposite sides of the can-body, so as to permit the removal of the cover or the retention of the same on the canbody; and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail vertical transverse sections, drawn on a larger scale, respectively on lines 4 4, Fig. 2, and 5 5, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, a represents the body of a garbage-can, and b the cover of the same. The latter is provided with a rim 1), 5 5 which fits over the rim of the can-be dy a. To the diamctrically-opposite sides of the can-body are attaclied, by rivets or otherwise, perforated hail-ears a, which are provided at their inner faces with inclined cams d, that ()0 are preferably made integral with the bailears and which serve, in connection with cams c on the adjacent faces 6 of angularpivots e at the end of a bail to produce the inward shifting of the pivots when the bail f is moved from its position on one side of thecan-body to a position on the opposite side of the same, so that the inner portions of the angular pivots c are moved inwardly over the rim of the cover and hold the same thereby in position on the can-body, so as to prevcntit from being removed from the can, while on returning the bail to its former position the cams onthe .angular portions of the pivots assume their normal position, (shown in Fig. 7 5 4,) in which position the removing of the cover for filling or emptying the can is readily accomplished.
When the cover is retained in position on the can-body, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, by 8o moving the angular pivots against the tension of the bail into inward position over the rim of the cover the accidental removal of the cover is prevented and the contents of the can held inclosed in the same, so that they 8 5 are not scattered or otherwise interfered with. The facility with which the bail is moved from one position to the other, so as to release or retain the cover, permits the convenient handling of the can by the cartman 0 and the return of ti 0 can for repeated use.
In place of the cams on the perforated bailears and on the pivots at the ends of the bail, other means operated by the bail may be used for producing the retaining and releas- 5 ing of the cover.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A garbage-can, comprising a can-body having perforated bail-ears provided with inclined cams at their inner faces, a cover for the can-body, and a bail provided with. angular pivots at its ends, said pivots having inclined faces adjacent tothe cams of the ears so as to permit the lateral motion of the angular pivots for retaining or releasing the cover on or from the can-body.
2. A garbage-can, consisting of a canbody, a cover provided With a circumferential rim resting on the rim of the can-body, perforated bail-ears attached at diametrically opposite points to the can-body and provided With inclined cams, and a bail provided With angular pivots, the inner ends of said pivots being provided With inclined cams Working in connection With the cams of the bail-ears in moving the angular pivots for retaining the coverin closed position on the can-body or for permitting the return of the pivots into normal position for removing the cover. V
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as l 5 my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
