Specification of Letters Patent.
7 LID-LIFTER FOR RECEPTLAGLES.
' Application filed July 16-, 192 0. Seria1'No. 396,664.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GLENN A. KNAPP, 'citi-. zen of the United States, residing at Hugo-V ton, in the county of Stevens and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid-Lifters for Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of- I the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lidlifters and more particularly to a device adapted to be applied to receptacles having a close fitting cover whereby the cover can be quickly and readily removed when so desired. As a general rule, receptacles which contain medicinal compounds, shoe polish and the like are provided with a close fitting cover and as there is no gripping surface on the cover for engagement by the hand, difliculty is found in removing these covers from the container and it is the main object of my invention to provide a device adapted to be used in connection with these containers whereby the cover can be quickly and readily removed from the container.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a lid lifter or starter, one portion of which is carried by the receptacle itself and adapted to cooperate with a second portion carried by the cover, whereby the thumb and fingers can be readily engaged with these portions in removing the cover from the receptacle.
With the above and other objects in View,
the invention consists in the novel features and construction, the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view taken through a receptacle, illustrating my improved lid lifter attached thereto,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the receptacle,
Fig. 3 is a detail plan View,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken through a receptacle illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention, and
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of that form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 4.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the body of a metallic receptacle, such as is used in packing salve or medicinal compounds of a like character, shoe polish and various other articles of this character. The cover, which is generallyindicated by the numeral 2, is frlctionally engaged with the top portion'of the body asillustrated, and in order to 'remove this cover it is necessary to provide some means whereby the cover can be engaged by the hand and to this end, I provide a lug or push rod 3, which is integrally formed with the body 1 and adapted to project upwardly upon one side thereof to'a point adjacent the top-0f the cover 2, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper end of said rod projecting through a perforated ear 4, .which is formed integral with the cover 2 and extendedat right angles thereto.
It is preferred to have the push rod or lug 3 stamped integral with the body of the receptacle 1 during the stamping or constructing of the same and then bent upwardly to a vertical position along one side of the body and having its upper end terminating at the top of the receptacle. The cover 2, which is provided with the perforated ear 4 is engaged with the top of the receptacle 1, so that the upper end of the push rod or lug 3 will engage the opening in the ear 4, said ear forming. a guide for the rod 3 and also to prevent rotation of the cover 2 after the same has been placed in position upon the receptacle.
In order to quickly remove the cover 2 from the receptacle, the thumb is engaged with the top of the rod 3 while the fingers adjacent the thumb are engaged beneath the plate 4 and by pushing downwardly upon the rod 3 and pulling upwardly upon the plate 4, the coverwill be quickly disengaged from the upper end of the receptacle 1.
In Figs. 4 and 5, I have illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention, wherein the member 3 is in the form of a rod, the lower end of which is soldered or otherwise secured, to the body of the receptacle 1' as shown at 5, said rod extending upwardly through a perforated ear 4' formed on the cover 2 and provided at its extreme upper end with a loop 6 forming a suitable thumb engaging member whereby the thumb of the operator can be readily engaged with a loop .6 and the fingers adj acent the thumb engaged beneath the plate Patented Apr. 5, 1921'.
the cover 2 will be.
quickly disengaged from the upper end of the receptacle 1'. t g
It will be understood that while I have shown and described my invention as applied to a small metal receptacle, the device.
can be used equally as well on either small or large receptacles of any type wherein the be noted that the device will occupy a mini.-
mum space in packing, as these receptacles are usually packed in a substantially square carton and in this case, the receptacle will be arranged within the carton or container in such a way that the lifting device willbe disposed within the corner of the carton so as to eliminate the requirement of a particular shaped carton for packing these receptacles. It will also be noted that the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1' to 3 will be formed or stamped integrally with the receptacle, so as to reduce the cost of manufacture. 7
What I claim is:
t A device for removing a receptacle cover including a rigid member carried by the receptacleand extending upwardly adjacent the side wall thereof, a cover for the receptacle, a'perforate'd car on the cover ex tending at right angles therefrom and forming a finger piece, said rigid member hav ing its upper end projecting through the perforated ear, a horizontally disposed engaging member at the upper end of the r1g1d member whereby said engaging port 7 tion and fear can be engaged by the thumb and fingers of the hand for removing thecover. A
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
