Be it known that I, Jsssn ll. SNELL, a citizen of the United States, reslding at llion,
in the county of llerkimcr and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Rail- Chair; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invent ion relates to chairs for railroadrails, and has for its object to provide a de- 1 vice of this character adapted to securely and unyieldingly hold the rails of a railroad against spreading under pressure, thus insuring at all times a perfect and safe track.
A further object is to provide a device of this character that may .lit readily and ell'cctivcly fastened to the lie of the railroad.
\Yith these and ot her objects in view, which will more full) appear from the de scription below and the claims hereto appended, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as shown and described.

Referring tothe drawings, 1 designates the base portion of my rail-chair, having an intcgral jaw 2, which is provided with teeth or serrations 3 onthe inner face thereof. The jaw 2 engages the outward flange cf the rail, and thereby revents the same from spreading when an er pressure. The inner and is spiked down in the usual manner, having an aperture 4 for the reception of said spike. 2. A device of the class described, having a dog engaging the side of a railroad-tie, and a pointed lag adapted to engage the center of said tie, substantially as described.
3. A chair for raihray'rarla having an integral jaw for engaging the outer flange of a rail, said jaw being provided with vertical and horizontal teeth, apertures for spiking said chair to the tie, one of said apertures having a shoulder 5, with teeth 11, form} venting the spike from becoming loose, sue stantialiy'as described.
