COMBINATION-SPIKE..-
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 6, i904. Serial to. 223,435.
, Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VALDEMAR RAsMUssEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Combination-Spike, of which the following is a specification- The object of my invention is to produce a spike which has all the advantages of the driven into a railroad-tie for fastening a rail to the .same Fi 2, a side view of the combination-spike be ore used as fastener; Fig. 3, a
' front view of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a side view of a combination-spike when in use as fastener. Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout .the several views.
My combination-spike is composed of two piecesthe main piece or the enuine spike 1,
- which has to be driven in, erein the tie,)
and its keyythe holder 2. The main piece 1 is pointed at its lower end and shaped as shown on the drawings, 2 and 3, to give room for the hook 3, whic forms the lower end of 2 and the holder itself. Further, the
main piece 1 is rovided with a kind of a shoulder 4, whic matches a cut or recess 5 in the key 2. The main piece is provided with a head 6, shaped according to the purpose the spike is intended for, here the shape of a railspike, and the key 2 is provided with a similar head.
When they are to be used, the main spike and itskey are placed in the position shown in Fig. 2. The spike is then forced into the tie by striking the'head of themain spike withahammer until the head of the key rest upon the rail-flange. Any further striking upon the main spike will then force the hook 3 of the key into the wood, because'of en-, gagement of the shoulder 4 with the inclined sideof the recess 5 in the key. The hook 3 thus prevents the spike from working out of the tie. When it is desired to remove the spike, itis only necessary to withdraw the main spike until the shoulder4 engages with the recess 5. The spike may then be easily removed.
Having so described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a main spike havin at its lower end a lateral projection provided with a recess inits upper side and also having on the same side a cam projection between its ends, of a key having at its lower end'a hook shaped to' engage the; recess of the main spike and having between its ends a recess ada ted to be engaged by the cam projection of the main spike, substantially as described.
