Definitions

  • This invention relates to new and useful improvements in metallic railroad-ties and the principal object of the invention is, to provide a simple and efficient tie capable of holding rails against spreading or sinking.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a tie having a novel fastening means which will allow the rails to-be released upon the proper manipulation, thereby allowing the parts to be replaced.
  • a further object of the invention is to provide a novel locking means for the rails
  • Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tie constructed in accordance with thisinvention.

"METALLIC znrtinnoaimrin,
To all whom arm concern} Be it known that I,' M1A B. Goonwrn, a
citizen of the United QStateS, residing at Norphlet, inthe county of Union and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railroad- Ties; and I do hereby declare the. following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which make and use the same.
I This invention relates to new and useful improvements in metallic railroad-ties and the principal object of the invention is, to provide a simple and efficient tie capable of holding rails against spreading or sinking.
it appertains to Another object of the invention is to provide a tie having a novel fastening means which will allow the rails to-be released upon the proper manipulation, thereby allowing the parts to be replaced.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel locking means for the rails,
I which will effectively prevent the rails from becoming accidentally released.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists'inthe novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tie constructed in accordance with thisinvention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the key used for releasing the device.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, thev numeral 1 designates bodies 5, which are connected by the reduced strip 6. This reduced strip is bent so that its upper face lies flush with the lower face of the enlargement 5 as illustrated in Fig. 2 and the plates 5 are provided with the openings 7 for the reception of the bolts, which secure the device to the body 1. Suitable apertures 8 are formed in the reduced TED Mint 13. Goonwmjor News; .annn vs is.

ings are designed to .rcceive which the, device is unlocked. A
. Secured tothe underside of the tie i's '1 plate des1gnated generally, bythe numeral I 10- comprising a body 11 having ifor-med therein, at wsuitab'le inte1wals,'tl1e openings 12 for the rece,pt1on ,ofthe bolts, which secure the plate 4 to the tie and the openings 13 are formed in the plate9, through which thelower ends of the securing plates extend.
Secured to the under side of the plate 5 and extending downwardly therefromarIe the spaced ears 14-, the use of which will appear as the description'proceedsQPivoted between the ears are the locking pawls 15 having connected thereto, the springs 16 and these pawls are providedwith the points 17,
which are arranged to engage in notches 18 20 of which engage the rail flanges as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
In order to provide a releasing means by which the pawls 15 may be made to disengage the walls of the notches 18 there is provided the key best illustrated in Fig. 4
7 comprising the shank 21, having formed at one end the loop 22. On the opposite end of the shank is the bit 23 and this bit is used to release the pawls,,when the key is prop- ...erly manipulated, thereby'permitting the,
formed in theattaching spikes 19, the heads spikes 19 to be withdrawn and allowing the rails to be removed.
It will be apparent from the foregoing;
that in use the ties are laid in the usual way but the plates f and 9 are first put in position as shown in Fig. 2. It will thus be seen that the whole will be assembled and the rails may then be put inplace in the de- 20 will engage the'flanges when the spikes are driven home and upon forcing the spikes downwardly, it will be seen that they will engage the pawls 15 and upon still further downward movement of the spikes, it will be seen that the lower'end will enter the openings 13 in the plates 9. After the spikes have been forced home, it will be seen that the pawls will engage in the notches 18 the shanks of the spikes and thereby lock the same against movement. In order to release the tie to replace any worn or broken part, the key 21 is provided which will upon insertion through the opening 9 permit the pawls 15 to be released and thus allow the rails and ties to be removed so that any parts may be renewed or repaired.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is p 1. A tieof the character described comprising a body having openings near each end, plates covering the openings, pawls pivoted to the plates, the plates being provided with openings, notched spikes extending into the openings, the walls of the notches in the spike being engaged by the pawls and heads on the spikes engaging the rails to hold the same in place.
2. A tie comprising a body provided with In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
